Storage Tips: How to Store Fruits and Vegetable in Refrigerator For Longer Shelf Life

The CSR Journal Magazine

The freshness duration of various fruits varies significantly, impacting how long they remain consumable. For instance, apples can last about one week when stored at room temperature, while they can be preserved for three to four weeks in a refrigerator. Bananas, on the other hand, last between two to seven days at room temperature, but should only be refrigerated once they have fully ripened. Berries, typically delicate, can stay fresh for three to seven days when kept in a fridge, ideally stored unwashed until consumption.

Citrus fruits typically last around one week at room temperature, extending their shelf life to nearly one month when refrigerated. Grapes can maintain their freshness for several days outside the fridge, but this duration can be extended to up to two weeks when properly chilled. Tomatoes have a unique ripening process; they should be kept at room temperature until they ripen and can then be refrigerated for a duration of up to two weeks.

Duration for Vegetables

Mushrooms have a very brief shelf life, lasting only one day at room temperature, but they can remain fresh for three to seven days when stored in the fridge. Onions are quite hardy, capable of lasting more than six weeks when placed in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Potatoes also have a long shelf life, surviving more than six weeks when stored in a cool, dark, and dry environment.

Identifying When to Discard Produce

Not every piece of fruit or vegetable that exhibits minor damage needs to be thrown away. Slightly bruised apples, brown bananas, and soft tomatoes can still be safe for consumption, provided they have no signs of mould. However, mouldy berries and grapes are generally best discarded, as invisible mould toxins can spread to other surrounding fruits. It is advisable to dispose of green or sprouting potatoes, as they can contain natural toxins that remain even after cooking.

To maximise the freshness of produce, there are simple storage tips that can be beneficial. It is crucial to store different fruits and vegetables according to their optimal temperature requirements. Produce should only be washed prior to eating, not before storage, to maintain freshness. Additionally, keeping onions separate from potatoes and avoiding the storage of apples and bananas with other produce is essential, as they emit ethylene gas, which accelerates ripening.

Moreover, it is advisable to purchase only as much fresh produce as can be consumed within a few days, thereby reducing waste. Proper storage techniques can significantly impact the shelf life of fruits and vegetables, with ideal temperature management, ensuring proper airflow, and separating ethylene-producing fruits contributing to prolonged freshness and improved food safety.
