Five Indian nationals have been arrested in Thailand in connection with the alleged kidnapping of three fellow Indians, who were reportedly held for ransom. According to local media reports, the suspects were apprehended at a hotel in the Khlong Tan area of Bangkok on July 27 while preparing for an outbound flight. The situation came to light when the Indian Embassy informed local authorities following complaints from the victims’ families.

The three victims, who were reportedly on holiday, were rescued by the police from a house in Pattaya on the evening of July 25. The Indian Embassy’s involvement was critical, as they alerted the authorities after receiving troubling information from the family members regarding the well-being of the tourists.

The abductors allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs 40 lakh from each victim’s family, intensifying the urgency for a police response. The victims were identified as Mohit, 23, Ashish, 24, and Himanshu, 20, all of whom were targeted during a supposed budget-friendly holiday package.

Details of the Abduction

According to police reports, the victims had been lured to Pattaya under the guise of an attractive seven-day holiday offer. Instead of a vacation, they found themselves confined in a location where they were allegedly subjected to various forms of assault. The investigation revealed that the three men were held captive for several days prior to their rescue.

The investigation commenced on July 21 when the Indian Embassy notified Chonburi Immigration Police and Pattaya City Police. Families of the victims provided recordings that displayed the victims tied up and enduring physical harm, which played a crucial role in prompting police action.

Police executed a raid on a two-storey townhouse in Pattaya based on intelligence and security camera footage. During the operation, they discovered the victims confined separately on the second floor, each with their hands and feet bound and mouths taped. Signs of physical assault were visible on the victims, indicating the gravity of their ordeal.

Arrests and Investigative Findings

The five suspects apprehended in Bangkok were identified as Avtar Singh, 38, Jagjit Singh, 38, Rambalak Kumar, 24, Sukhbir Singh, 37, and Kulra Singh, 27. During the interrogation, it was reported that the accused disclosed they were directed by a Pakistani national, with whom they had been in contact via a chat application for approximately a month.

Authorities believe that the alleged mastermind behind the operation is located in Dubai and had intended to collect the ransom in cryptocurrency. Reports indicated that the suspects had been promised cash, valuables, and airline tickets as compensation for their involvement in the criminal plans.

Moreover, police recovered various items during the raid, including adhesive tape and a wooden object allegedly used in the assaults. Red spray paint was also found, believed to have been utilised to create staged images and videos of the victims intended to pressure families into paying the ransom.

Notably, investigators uncovered that another Indian national had previously been held at the same property. This individual was reportedly released after a ransom payment of approximately Rs 30 lakh was made by his family.
