Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has resurfaced in public discourse regarding artificial intelligence, this time indicating that AI could significantly diminish the relevance of politicians and bureaucrats. His latest commentary comes after a series of posts where he expressed strong opinions on the implications of AI in various sectors, including education. Varma suggests that a shift to AI-driven governance could result in a system that is not only transparent but also resilient against manipulation.

In a prior statement connected to the NEET examination controversy, Varma highlighted the disruptions AI might bring to the educational landscape, suggesting that students face challenges beyond mere technical issues. His focus now has shifted to political implications, as he encourages readers to envision a world where bureaucratic roles are replaced by artificial intelligence.

Varma argues that an algorithm possesses characteristics that make it impervious to corruption; it cannot be bribed, intimidated, or swayed to benefit particular individuals. According to him, an AI system would operate devoid of familial ties or financial incentives, which he believes creates numerous opportunities to eradicate corruption.

To bolster his claims, Varma referenced instances from Dubai, where smart police stations facilitate FIR registrations without requiring direct interactions with police officers. He raised a critical question regarding the future of political roles if AI can render administration transparent and exempt from corruption. Varma offered an illustrative scenario involving a legislative assembly, where claims made by a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) regarding agricultural output could be scrutinised for integrity. He suggested that if an MLA cites local data that is disputed, voters may struggle to establish the authenticity of such claims.

An AI governance system, he argues, would not depend on potentially biased data from local officials. It could synthesise extensive information, including satellite imagery, weather patterns, and pesticide performance metrics from various countries, aiming to provide accurate recommendations. This, Varma believes, would eliminate personal biases and political incentives.

The Future of Political Representation

Varma asserts that the capabilities of AI in analysing substantial quantities of data would be unmatched by any human politician. He contends that traditionally, elected representatives have acted as mediators between citizens and governmental structures, a role that could be less significant with the advent of AI-led governance systems.

He anticipates that existing politicians may resist such transformations, arguing for the necessity of “human accountability” and decision-making. However, Varma suggests these arguments would primarily stem from fears of losing the capacity to distribute benefits, maintain political networks, and exploit public office for personal gains.
