India’s Job Market Shifts: Healthcare and Therapy Surge 18% as IT Drops

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian job market is witnessing a significant decrease in opportunities for IT and software positions, as companies adapt their structures to incorporate artificial intelligence. A recent report by job listing platform Indeed highlights this trend, revealing a surprising decline in these sectors. Over the past three months, postings for IT and technology-related jobs have reportedly decreased by 18 per cent.

Furthermore, the report indicates a broader slowdown in job postings within India, showing a 1.8 per cent decline in June 2026. Among the sectors affected, software development has seen an 18 per cent drop, while IT Infrastructure, Operations & Support and Data & Analytics have fallen by 18 per cent and 16 per cent respectively. Such statistics underscore challenges faced by the IT sector amidst shifting demands.

As companies streamline their operations, they are increasingly prioritising the integration of AI technologies, which has contributed to job reductions in traditional IT roles. This evolution reflects broader global trends within the technological landscape, where many organisations are reassessing their staffing needs.

Rising Demand for Therapists and Other Fields

In contrast to the decline in IT jobs, the demand for therapists in India is reportedly on the rise. Specifically, job openings in therapy and food preparation services have seen a notable 18 per cent increase over the same three-month period. This growth indicates a shifting focus within the job market as consumer needs evolve.

Additionally, other sectors such as healthcare are also performing well, with demand for sports and medical technicians increasing by 15 per cent. These developments suggest that while technology roles are declining, there are emerging opportunities in fields that cater to personal well-being and health, which may reflect changing societal priorities.

The distinctions in job market performance highlight how some sectors continue to thrive, even as others grapple with contractions. Companies in therapy and food services are capitalising on shifting demands, demonstrating adaptability in a changing economic landscape.

Overall Job Market Resilience

Despite the downturn in some sectors, Indeed maintains there is no immediate cause for alarm in India’s formal job market. Their report indicates that overall job postings are still 1.5 per cent higher compared to a year ago and are approximately 85 per cent above levels seen before the pandemic began. This shows that while hiring practices may become more selective, companies are still actively recruiting talent.

Callam Pickering, an economist at Indeed, has commented on the Indian job market’s resilience. He suggests that challenges stemming from international conflicts, such as those in the Middle East, are likely to influence inflation and lead to more cautious consumer behaviour. Nevertheless, he asserts that India’s strong economic growth positions it well to mitigate these impacts.

The job slowdown in the technology sector aligns with a growing trend of layoffs across the global tech industry. Major corporations have announced workforce reductions in response to changing economic conditions. Notably, Amazon reportedly cut about 30,000 corporate and technical roles between October 2025 and January 2026, while Meta and Microsoft also announced significant layoffs earlier this year.
