Trump Reinstates Hormuz Blockade on Iran and Imposes Ship Toll

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States is reinstating a blockade on Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, alongside plans to impose a toll on ships seeking safe passage. This decision follows escalating tensions and new doubts regarding peace negotiations aimed at resolving ongoing conflict in the region.

According to Trump, Iranian vessels will be prohibited from traversing the strait, while other nations will still have unrestricted access. He stated that the toll, which is set at 20 per cent of eligible cargo, will contribute towards ensuring safety and security in this strategically vital area.

Impact of Recent Attacks

The recent blockade announcement coincides with an Iranian attack on a container ship within the strait on Sunday. The US has claimed that Iran has attempted to assert control over the waterway following the onset of the conflict on February 28. At that time, approximately 20 per cent of global oil and gas shipments passed through this route.

Iran has maintained that it has the right to regulate maritime traffic and may charge fees, citing a temporary peace agreement established the previous month. However, the United States and other countries dispute this position, referencing international laws concerning freedom of navigation. In response, the US military has initiated operations to create alternative shipping routes that remain outside of Iranian influence.

As of now, both Iran and the US are several weeks into a 60-day negotiation period aiming for a resolution to the war and a consensus on Iran’s contentious nuclear programme. The recent attacks have heightened fears of a significant conflict resurgence, adversely affecting global economic stability.

Military Actions and Regional Tensions

The US military reported extensive operations on Monday, targeting numerous locations within Iran, including missile operations and drone facilities. The Pentagon has asserted that Iran does not possess control over the Strait of Hormuz. In response to the mounting crisis, the European Union’s foreign policy chief emphasised the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in international waters.

In reaction to these developments, Iranian officials have stated that they will defend their rights to access the strait. Mohammed Mokhber, an advisor to Iran’s supreme leader, emphasised their commitment to maintaining passage rights for Iranian vessels, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard described the strait as “our territory” and expressed opposition to foreign interference.

Meanwhile, missile alert systems activated three times in Bahrain and there were reports of intercepted hostile fire in Kuwait. Jordan confirmed it had successfully neutralised several Iranian missiles without incurring casualties. In addition, Iranian regional military actions have reportedly caused fatalities in Iranian provinces and have involved retaliatory measures against locations housing US forces across the Middle East.

Negotiations and Ongoing Efforts

As tensions escalate, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei placed the onus of the crisis on the United States, accusing it of violating an earlier memorandum of understanding. He further stressed that Iran would not permit visits to nuclear sites that were previously targeted by American strikes.

Recent comments from Trump implied that the interim peace agreement is no longer viable, despite ongoing mediation efforts from countries like Pakistan, Qatar, and Egypt to secure a stable resolution. Multiple sources indicate that mediation to reinforce the ceasefire continued on Sunday, highlighting the complexities surrounding the negotiations.

In light of the unfolding situation, the international community is closely monitoring developments in the region, as both sides navigate a precarious landscape marked by heightened military engagements and diplomatic efforts to avert further conflict.
