US Ceasefire Efforts Between India and Pakistan Were a Favour to Pakistan: Trump

The CSR Journal Magazine

On May 15, 2025, US President Donald Trump asserted that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was executed as a courtesy to Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During a press interaction aboard Air Force One, Trump revealed that this initiative was largely at the request of other nations. He mentioned that he would not have personally advocated for such a ceasefire but decided to proceed for what he described as the benefit of “terrific people” in Pakistan.

Trump’s comments come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, particularly following India’s military operations. The President’s assertion raises questions about the driving forces behind the ceasefire, especially given conflicting reports regarding India and Pakistan’s communications with the United States.

Pakistan Allegedly Pursued Diplomatic Engagements

Field Marshal Asim Munir reportedly stated that India had sought American mediation in the conflict, a claim that contrasts with disclosures regarding Pakistan’s vigorous diplomatic efforts. According to local reports, Munir claimed during a ceremony at the Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi that the engagement was accepted by Pakistan to promote regional peace.

However, documentation under the US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) reviewed by ANI indicated that between May 6 and May 9, 2025, Pakistan had nearly sixty interactions with various US officials, including lawmakers and defence personnel. This suggests that Islamabad engaged in significant outreach to influence American policymakers during a pivotal time in the conflict, particularly as tensions escalated following India’s Operation Sindoor.

The timing of these engagements coincided with India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in targeted strikes on terrorist infrastructure in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This military operation has been characterised by Indian officials as a necessary tri-service response to ensure national security.

India’s Military Response Detailed

In response to the evolving situation, Indian authorities articulated that Operation Sindoor was launched as a comprehensive measure aimed at dismantling terror networks. The Indian Ministry of Defence confirmed on the night of May 6 and 7, 2025, that their armed forces carried out precision strikes on nine sites believed to be linked to terrorist activities.

Officials have stated that the operation was carefully planned and executed to achieve its objectives while minimising collateral damage. This marked a significant escalation in India’s military operations in response to provocations from across the border, highlighting ongoing security concerns in the region.

The Indian government’s commitment to addressing terrorism has been a focal point, creating pressure for decisive action in a complex geopolitical landscape. The details of the operation emphasised the Indian leadership’s position against what it perceives as threats to its national integrity and public safety.
