Weather experts attribute the current precipitation to an unusual convergence of multiple weather systems affecting northern India. The primary rain-bearing feature, the monsoon trough, currently spans from Ganganagar to Gwalior, continuing through Sidhi, Jamshedpur, and Digha before extending into the east-central Bay of Bengal. This trough’s positioning over northern India allows it to channel substantial moisture into the Delhi-NCR region.

Additionally, there is a notable upper-air cyclonic circulation situated over southwest Uttar Pradesh, extending to a height of 5.8 km above mean sea level. This system is contributing to enhanced upward movement in the atmosphere, which allows rain-bearing clouds to develop quickly over Delhi and surrounding districts. Meteorologists have also recognised a second upper-air cyclonic circulation located between 4.5 km and 5.8 km altitude over southeast Uttar Pradesh. The interaction between these two systems is intensifying convection, leading to widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the region.

Complicating the weather further is an active Western Disturbance moving through the middle and upper troposphere north of latitude 29°N. While Western Disturbances are typically linked with winter weather, their interaction with the active monsoon can significantly amplify rainfall by introducing additional moisture and causing instability in the atmosphere. This dynamic weather situation underscores the complexity of current meteorological patterns affecting the area.

As heavy rainfall progresses, forecasters predict that the downpours originating in Faridabad and Noida will extend throughout most of Delhi, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad. An additional influx of rain-bearing clouds is anticipated during the afternoon and evening hours. Given that the ground is already saturated from earlier rain, authorities have advised residents to refrain from non-essential travel.
