India has accused Pakistan of employing severe measures against civilians in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), resulting in the alleged deaths of more than 40 individuals. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described these actions as deeply concerning, labelling them a grave violation of human rights. Many others have reportedly sustained serious injuries amidst this crackdown, prompting strong condemnation from Indian officials.

The situation, as highlighted in a statement by the MEA, has raised alarm within the international community. Authorities have called for an independent investigation into these reported unlawful killings and called for accountability for those responsible within the Pakistani government. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasised that the actions of the Pakistani establishment exemplify a “complete disregard” for the rights of the people in PoJK.

Further complicating the situation, India’s MEA has pointed to remarks made by Pakistan’s Defence Minister, who labelled the protesters as “enemies.” These statements have been interpreted as indicative of the Pakistani authorities’ condescending view of civilians demanding basic rights and freedoms. India’s foreign ministry has expressed deep concern that such rhetoric exacerbates an already volatile situation.

Pakistan’s Acknowledgement of Militants Turning Against State

India also referred to a public statement made by Pakistan’s Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs. The statement allegedly acknowledged that the armed groups, referred to as “mujahideen,” which have been trained, funded, and equipped by the Pakistani government for operations against India, are now reportedly turning their arms against the Pakistani state itself. This revelation has reinforced India’s long-held position that Pakistan’s approach to militant groups has contributed to internal instability.

New Delhi pointed out that this shift represents a significant concern not only for Pakistan but also for the regional security landscape. The Indian government has maintained that Pakistan’s support for terrorism has boomeranged, impacting its own national security as the very groups nurtured by the state have turned against it. This acknowledgment is viewed as a candid admission of the consequences of Pakistan’s past policies.

In light of the political unrest in PoJK, India has raised questions regarding the legitimacy of the recent electoral process in the region. The MEA described the elections as a “humiliating rejection” of the Pakistani establishment, especially amid what they termed an increasingly violent political climate. Such an environment raises concerns about the credibility of democratic processes in the region.

Calls for International Scrutiny

People in PoJK have reportedly called for an independent international inquiry into the recent killings, with pleas for global organisations to closely examine the actions of Pakistan. India has joined these calls, urging the international community to scrutinise Pakistan’s conduct in the region and hold it accountable for the alleged atrocities.

The MEA’s statement highlighted the need for greater international awareness regarding the ongoing human rights situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to supporting the demands of the people in that region for justice and human rights protections.

As the situation continues to unfold, India remains focused on rallying international support to address the challenges faced by citizens in PoJK. Increased advocacy for human rights and accountability is seen as essential in restoring peace and stability in the region.
