Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid homage to the state’s weaving community on National Handloom Day, emphasising their crucial role in preserving India’s cultural heritage. During an event in Lucknow, he acknowledged that handloom artisans contribute significantly to the ongoing traditions and craftsmanship that have been nurtured over centuries.

Adityanath presented the Sant Kabir State-Level Handloom Awards at the gathering, expressing his appreciation for the dedicated artisans throughout the state. He emphasised that these artisans are vital to maintaining India’s identity, creativity, and craftsmanship.

Connection to the Swadeshi Movement

In his address, the Chief Minister highlighted the historical significance of August 7, linking it to the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905. He noted that this movement aimed to encourage Indians to preferring local products over foreign imports, playing a crucial role in the country’s freedom struggle. According to Adityanath, the Swadeshi Movement not only fostered self-reliance but also bolstered confidence in traditional industries, especially in handloom weaving.

By reintroducing and promoting handloom products, the government hopes to reinforce the spirit of nationalism and cultural pride. Adityanath remarked that every piece of handwoven fabric tells the story of the artisan, showcasing their skill, creativity, and dedication. He encouraged artisans to take pride in their work, reinforcing their significance in society.

Uttar Pradesh hosts a diverse range of renowned handloom traditions, such as the Banarasi silk saree and Chikankari embroidery from Lucknow, along with carpets from Bhadohi and handwoven textiles from various regions including Mau, Tanda, and Mubarakpur. These traditional crafts not only provide employment to numerous families but also significantly contribute to the state’s economy and exports.

Support for Weavers and Future Generations

The Chief Minister stated that recognising artisans through state-level awards is intended to inspire excellence and motivate younger generations to uphold traditional crafts. He affirmed that supporting weavers is a priority for his administration, with initiatives aimed at improving market access and integrating modern technology into traditional practices.

National Handloom Day serves as an annual celebration of India’s rich handloom heritage, observed every year on August 7 to honour the legacy of the Swadeshi Movement. The day is dedicated to appreciating the efforts of millions of weavers whose craftsmanship has sustained traditional textile arts despite the challenges posed by modernisation and shifting market dynamics.
