Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, inaugurated the ‘As Seen on Netflix’ section on the Incredible India portal on August 6, 2026. This initiative is part of a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Tourism and Netflix India aimed at showcasing the authentic locations, cultural practices, and experiences depicted in Netflix’s films and series. The launch occurred during a special event at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi, marking ten years of Netflix’s presence in India.

The event featured a fireside conversation with Netflix Co-Chief Executive Officer Ted Sarandos, who discussed how storytelling can significantly promote India’s cultural heritage and tourism. Both Shekhawat and Sarandos expressed their commitment to working together to highlight authentic narratives based on India’s diverse cultural, geographical, and historical contexts.

Emphasising India’s Rich Cultural Heritage

During his address, Minister Shekhawat highlighted the timeless inspiration that India’s stories offer to the global audience. He pointed out that advancements in technology present a unique opportunity to share these narratives more broadly than ever before. According to him, the creative economy plays a crucial role in economic growth, providing employment opportunities while also safeguarding India’s cultural identity.

He expressed the importance of collaborations that not only uplift local talent but also celebrate the multitude of traditions that make up India’s civilisational heritage. Shekhawat further remarked that culture is a strategic asset for India, as every monument, festival, language, and folk tradition embodies stories that deserve international recognition.

Furthermore, the Minister underscored the necessity of combining storytelling with cultural tourism. He believes that showcasing India’s heritage through various media platforms can significantly enhance the country’s visibility and appeal to global tourists.

Netflix’s Commitment to Showcasing Indian Narratives

Ted Sarandos, in his speech, acknowledged the plurality of narratives within India, stating that the country is characterised by diverse cultures and traditions. He reflected on how, over the past ten years, stories from various regions have captured international attention and encouraged audiences to explore India’s rich cultural tapestry first-hand.

Sarandos reiterated Netflix’s commitment to maintaining its partnership with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism. He stated that the platform would continue to bring a wider array of stories originating from India to an international audience. This approach aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of the country’s multifaceted identity.

Over the last decade, Netflix has successfully collaborated with numerous creators across India, presenting narratives inspired by the nation’s eclectic cultures, landscapes, and communities. This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s vision of utilising storytelling as a powerful means to safeguard, promote, and celebrate the country’s cultural heritage, while simultaneously aiding cultural tourism and supporting the creative economy.
