Keralam’s Chief Minister VD Satheesan paid his respects to R Rajesh, a swimming instructor who lost his life while participating in flood rescue operations in Pulingome, Kannur. The CM visited Rajesh’s family home in Thiruvananthapuram to express condolences and solidarity during this difficult time. Rajesh reportedly made a heroic sacrifice by attempting to save residents affected by severe flash flooding in the region.

Impact of the Monsoon Flooding in Keralam

Severe monsoon flooding in Keralam has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 25 lives, with four additional individuals still unaccounted for, according to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA). The widespread inundation has displaced over 18,000 residents from their homes, forcing many families into temporary relief shelters. Current reports indicate that 18,434 individuals are housed in 418 active relief camps across the state.

Structural damages have been significant, with 52 houses reported as completely destroyed and 565 others suffering partial damage. The urgency of the situation prompted CM Satheesan, during a recent visit to Pathanamthitta district, to announce immediate financial aid of Rs 10,000 for each affected household. This measure aims to alleviate some of the hardships faced by residents displaced by the floods.

In Pathanamthitta, relief operations remain active, especially in the Thiruvalla region, where over 6,400 people currently reside in 133 relief camps due to stagnant floodwaters. CM Satheesan expressed commitment to ensuring that relief distribution proceeds without interruption by delegating full administrative and financial powers to district authorities.

Broader Context of Flooding in Nearby Regions

Heavy monsoon rains have not only affected Keralam but have also led to significant flooding in parts of Assam. In response, authorities in Assam have intensified their relief and rehabilitation efforts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced additional compensation for the families of those who perished in the floods, highlighting the broader impact of the monsoon season across various regions of India.

During his visit to the flood-affected areas, CM Satheesan noted that the rivers in Keralam have lost much of their capacity due to sediment accumulation. He assured the public that urgent measures would be initiated to address this issue, emphasising the necessity of maintaining effective water flow to mitigate future flooding risks.

Alongside infrastructural improvements, CM Satheesan also stated that Keralam aspires to establish one of the premier weather forecasting systems in the country. Efforts will be concentrated on strengthening disaster management mechanisms, particularly in vulnerable areas such as Pathanamthitta. This ambition underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing its preparedness for natural disasters.
