Tamil Nadu Congress Members of Parliament have formally written to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, urging him to reinstate the established convention of performing the Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu at the start of university and government functions within the state. The lawmakers highlight the importance of this practice in maintaining regional heritage while acknowledging national symbols.

In their letter, the MPs expressed concern over recent changes made during the 33rd convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University held on 28 July 2026. They noted a departure from tradition in the sequence of songs performed, which was considered disrespectful by many in Tamil Nadu. The letter emphasised that maintaining the original order of performances reflects respect for the state’s cultural identity.

Details of the Convocation Incident

The representatives indicated that the Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University had announced prior to the event that it would commence with Vande Mataram, followed by the National Anthem, placing Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu in third position. This decision, reportedly influenced by instructions from the Raj Bhavan, has contributed to feelings of unease among the Tamil populace.

The letter underscored the significance of the university’s namesake, Thiru Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai, who composed famous works, including the state song. The MPs argued that relegating Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu to a later position during such an important event was perceived as an unintended slight to both the legacy of the composer and the cherished tradition of Tamil Nadu.

Call for Clear Guidelines from the Raj Bhavan
