Maharashtra is engaging in discussions aimed at establishing the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 as a significant global cultural and spiritual event. Proposals being considered include an extensive outreach campaign during the upcoming Davos summit in 2027, alongside the Har Ghar Kumbh initiative and various spiritual and knowledge conclaves. These ideas were presented during a review meeting on August 4, 2026, chaired by Dr Kiran Kulkarni, Secretary of the Marathi Language and Cultural Affairs Department.

The meeting took place at the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) headquarters, featuring contributions from NTKMA Commissioner Shekhar Singh and senior officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Participants focused on strategies to elevate Simhastha Kumbh on international platforms while reinforcing Maharashtra’s spiritual and cultural identity through a proposed Maharashtra Spiritual Thought Leadership initiative.

Additionally, the discussions included the establishment of a world-class Simhastha Interpretation and Experience Centre aimed at offering visitors an immersive insight into the Kumbh’s historical, traditional, and cultural significance. Achieving recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the heritage areas in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar was also a key topic of deliberation.

Development of Cultural Centres Explored

The meeting also covered plans for creating a Kalagram, which would exhibit Maharashtra’s diverse handicrafts, folk traditions, and tribal arts. This initiative would involve partnerships with the South Zone Cultural Centre and the West Zone Cultural Centre to ensure a comprehensive presentation of cultural heritage. Further, plans for cultural programming at the proposed Godavari Pandal in Nashik and Ahilya Pandal in Trimbakeshwar were discussed to enrich the experience for attendees.

In another part of the review, Dr Kulkarni assessed the ongoing conservation and restoration efforts by ASI at significant heritage sites in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. These projects are essential preparatory measures for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027. He instructed officials to maintain quality while ensuring the timely completion of various initiatives.

Focus on Educational Participation

Earlier, on July 31, 2023, in an effort to turn the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 into a community-focused movement, the NTKMA conducted two stakeholder consultation meetings. These meetings convened representatives from several key educational institutions and industry groups at NTKMA’s headquarters. They were led by Commissioner Shekhar Singh, who aimed to foster active involvement from educational institutions in the event.

Participants included figures from organisations such as Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj, Nashik Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, and Mahatma Gandhi Vidyamandir. The discussions centred around mobilising students as volunteers through various platforms, including NSS, NCC, and Scouts & Guides. Strategies for appointing coordinators and organising structured training programs were also explored.

Additionally, the meetings aimed to integrate students into various community initiatives, such as cleanliness campaigns, environmental conservation efforts, and public awareness programmes, while also providing training in disaster management and first aid. This comprehensive approach is designed to enhance student engagement and allow for a collaborative effort in executing the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027.
