UK Detains Indian Merchant Navy Officer In Russian Oil Sanctions Probe

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian High Commission in London is closely monitoring the situation surrounding Captain Ajay Pant, who has been detained in the United Kingdom for allegedly violating British sanctions concerning Russian oil shipments. This information was conveyed by state government officials on Thursday, confirming that the High Commission is actively involved in addressing the case.

According to a formal communication from the High Commission, Captain Pant is currently being held at HMP Winchester. The diplomatic mission has undertaken measures to engage with UK officials regarding his case. The Indian authorities have emphasised the need for timely consular access to ensure Captain Pant’s well-being and legal rights are upheld.

On June 19, officials from the High Commission successfully established communication with Captain Pant via the prison telephone system. During this conversation, he affirmed that he was in good health, with access to medical facilities while in custody. He also mentioned that he is in regular contact with his wife, which alleviates some concerns regarding his situation.

Legal Assistance and Family Support Arranged

The High Commission has been proactive in its approach, maintaining ongoing communication with Captain Pant’s wife, his legal counsel, and his employer, Energios Maritime Private Limited. The employer has reportedly committed to providing legal aid and necessary support for Captain Pant’s family during this challenging period.

Additionally, the Indian High Commission has raised the matter with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to facilitate consular access and ensure the captain’s safety. The Indian authorities are coordinating their efforts to ensure that all necessary support measures are in place for the captain and his loved ones.

Captain Pant’s employer has expressed its intention to collaborate with the High Commission to guarantee that appropriate legal representation is furnished for him. As part of these efforts, Captain Pant is scheduled to attend a subsequent hearing on July 16, where the matter will be further addressed in a judicial setting.

Context of the Arrest and Government Response

Captain Ajay Pant, aged 38, served as the captain of the MV Smyrtoz, a tanker alleged to be part of a Russian shadow fleet. This vessel reportedly carried 98,000 tonnes of crude oil and was intercepted in the English Channel on June 14 as part of a joint operation involving the UK National Crime Agency and British Armed Forces.

The nature of the allegations against Captain Pant highlights the serious implications of breaches related to international sanctions. The case has drawn attention from both Indian and UK authorities, prompting the Indian government to remain vigilant and responsive regarding the welfare of its citizens abroad.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the state government is fully committed to addressing the interests of its citizens. He assured that communication with the Union government, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian High Commission is ongoing, reinforcing a united front in assisting Captain Pant.

In summary, the arrest of Captain Ajay Pant raises significant legal and diplomatic issues. The Indian High Commission is actively working to ensure that he receives the support he needs, as the case progresses towards the next scheduled hearing on July 16.
