Twisha Murder Case: Madhya Pradesh High Court Cancels Giribala Singh’s Anticipatory Bail

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has annulled the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh, a former judge, who is implicated in the death of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma. This decision stems from the examination of the factual circumstances surrounding the case, where Giribala Singh and her son, Samarth Singh, face serious allegations of dowry harassment. The sessions court had previously permitted the anticipatory bail on May 15, 2026, but the recent ruling from the High Court has led to a significant reversal.

Details of the Investigation

Samarth Singh, who is also a lawyer, is currently in custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has assumed responsibility for the investigation following the involvement of the Madhya Pradesh police. The CBI has re-registered the initial first information report (FIR) that included both Giribala Singh and her son as accused. On Monday, the investigation into Twisha’s death, which occurred on May 12, 2026, when she was allegedly found hanging at her matrimonial residence, was taken over by the agency.

The High Court’s decision, made on Wednesday, followed applications seeking the cancellation of Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail. The ruling issued by vacation judge Devnarayan Mishra emphasised the substantial allegations against Giribala Singh, resulting in the annulment of the lower court’s order. Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, argued that the manner in which anticipatory bail was obtained raised concerns regarding whether the trial court had adequately considered the relevant factors.

According to the prosecuting agency, investigations have revealed concerning behaviours from Giribala Singh, particularly in light of accusations that she manipulated evidence related to the case. Allegations from the victim’s family have indicated that Twisha had expressed dissatisfaction with her in-laws, claiming they neither allowed her to live happily nor mourn her circumstances.

Context of Twisha Sharma’s Death

Details concerning Twisha’s relationship with her husband and in-laws have emerged through WhatsApp chats and witness statements. Twisha reportedly informed her family that her in-laws believed she was addicted to drugs, leading to ongoing distress in her life. Following her marriage it is alleged that disputes arose, particularly when it was discovered she was pregnant, leading to accusations related to her character and a subsequent dispute over her health.

On May 5, 2026, Twisha reached out to her mother, seeking to leave her marital home, and on May 12, she contacted her mother again to report that her husband was shouting at her. Soon after, she was discovered deceased at her home. A postmortem was conducted at AIIMS Bhopal the following day, which further raised questions regarding the circumstances of her death and the potential involvement of her husband and mother-in-law.

Further complicating matters, Giribala Singh’s connections and her alleged attempts to influence the investigation and evidence have drawn scrutiny. Witnesses have claimed that she demanded dowry and sought to cast doubt on Twisha’s integrity. This unfolding narrative has resulted in significant public interest and concern regarding possible tampering and the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
