The tragic suicide of a first-year resident doctor at Surat New Civil Hospital has led to the suspension of four senior doctors. Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya expressed profound concern over the incident and has mandated a thorough inquiry and forensic post-mortem. This directive comes as part of an urgent response to the distressing situation that unfolded on August 11, 2026.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the minister’s orders resulted in the formation of a special investigation committee that worked diligently for 24 hours to gather evidence. Their findings indicated instances of ragging and mental harassment directed towards the deceased doctor, which has raised significant alarms within the healthcare community.

The quick turnaround and effectiveness of the investigative committee were highlighted in the report, confirming that over 80 statements were recorded from first-year junior doctors. Despite the absence of a suicide note, testimonies indicated a pattern of repeated mental distress caused by the senior medical staff involved.

Actions Taken Against Senior Staff

The immediate suspension of the four senior doctors was based on the preliminary conclusions drawn by the Anti-Ragging Committee. Additionally, the Head of Department (HOD) of the concerned department and several teaching staff members received ‘show-cause’ notices for their negligence in preventing such a grievous incident. This response illustrates the State Government’s commitment to taking strict measures against those responsible for fostering a hostile work environment.

Minister Pansheriya remarked that the government aims to uphold the dignity and safety of junior doctors within medical institutions. He emphasised that any form of maltreatment or mental cruelty is unacceptable and that the state will continue to enforce stringent actions against such conduct. The Minister’s statements reinforce the idea that creating a supportive environment is essential for the wellbeing of all healthcare professionals.

Furthermore, the minister has appealed to senior doctors to adhere to professional conduct, highlighting the importance of mentorship and guidance in training new doctors. He expressed that those who engage in abusive practices jeopardise not only their own reputations but also the future prospects of the junior healthcare professionals.

Support for Students and Family of the Deceased

In light of this tragic event, Minister Pansheriya has urged all medical students to report any instances of harassment or pressure they may face, assuring them that they can safely approach higher authorities, including the Minister himself, without fear. He reiterated the government’s promise to support students in achieving their careers while ensuring their safety.

The state has also extended its condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased doctor. In a phone conversation with the doctor’s father, the minister expressed his grief and offered support during this difficult time. He assured the family that justice would be pursued diligently and that no individual responsible for the tragedy would escape accountability.
