Bhopal Court Extends Judicial Custody of Giribala and Samarth Singh in Twisha Sharma Murder Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

A court in Bhopal has extended the judicial custody of former district judge Giribala Singh and her son Samarth Singh until July 28 in the case concerning Twisha Sharma’s death. The decision, made during a hearing on July 14, follows a request from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a 14-day extension of the remand.

Both accused participated in the hearing via video conferencing, as their legal representatives presented arguments to the court. The CBI’s application highlighted that the accused had not fully cooperated with the ongoing investigation, notably refusing to provide their voice samples.

The court had previously permitted the collection of these voice samples during an earlier hearing. However, upon CBI’s visit to the jail to conduct the collection, the agency reported that the accused declined to comply. Legal counsel for Twisha’s family sought to emphasise the lack of cooperation from the accused side.

Details on CBI’s Investigation

During the proceedings, the CBI advised the court that certain forensic reports from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) are still pending examination, and relevant digital evidence requires further forensic analysis. Additionally, testimony from key witnesses has yet to be captured, increasing the complexity of the ongoing investigation.

Based on these developments, CBI requested the additional time to deepen the investigation, stating that the extension would allow them to gather crucial evidence. The court granted this request, permitting the judicial remand to be prolonged for another 14 days.

Moreover, the CBI obtained court approval to collect the voice samples of both Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh, citing the need to match these with specific audio evidence gathered during the investigative process. Legal representatives disclosed that while Samarth initially agreed to provide his sample, he later retracted his consent.

Background of the Case

Twisha Sharma was discovered deceased in her residence located in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on the evening of May 12. Her in-laws are asserting that her death was a suicide; however, her maternal family contends that she was the victim of foul play and was murdered.

This discrepancy in the circumstances surrounding her death has further fueled the investigation undertaken by the CBI, now in its advanced stages. Statements from multiple witnesses are still pending, which the agency deems essential for fully understanding the events leading up to Twisha’s death.

As the investigation progresses, both familial sides remain under scrutiny, and the legal proceedings will continue to unfold in accordance with the court’s directives. The case has captured significant attention in the region, illustrating the complexities involved in probing deaths that arise from conflicting family narratives.
