‘Trump Is A Big Fan Of India’: Marco Rubio Dismisses Concerns Over Anti-India Sentiment In US

The CSR Journal Magazine

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on his visit to India, sought to alleviate concerns regarding the alleged increase of anti-India rhetoric in the United States. He emphasised that President Donald Trump admires India and its Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. This assertion comes in light of a controversial video response that Rubio provided to a journalist’s question about instances of racism targeting Indians in the US.

The inquiry reportedly referenced previous statements made by Trump, where he described India and China unfavourably, describing them as a “hellhole” while accusing individuals from these countries of misusing America’s birthright citizenship laws. Rubio’s remarks are intended to reaffirm strong bilateral ties amidst growing scrutiny.

Rubio’s Clarification on Media Exchange

During a media interaction on May 25, Rubio labelled the notion of systemic hostility towards India as unfounded, reinforcing the commitment of the US administration to New Delhi. He stated, “The President is a big fan of India, a big fan of Prime Minister Modi. I wouldn’t be here if the President didn’t want me to be here.” He further mentioned that the appointment of Sergio Gor as the US ambassador to India reflects Trump’s close ties to the country.

Rubio described how he had requested the journalist to specify who was making the alleged racist comments but did not receive a clear answer. “The bottom line is that in the modern era, you go online, and there are people saying all kinds of crazy stuff. I don’t even know if they’re real people or who they are,” he said, indicating that the harmful remarks may stem from anonymous online platforms.

In response to the initial question which queried the nature of racism directed towards Indians, the journalist noted, “There have been a lot of racist comments coming from the United States against Indians, Indian-Americans.” When pressed for particulars, he maintained that the endorsement of such remarks is evident. Rubio’s response, addressing the vagueness of the allegations, was that “every country has stupid people,” which he asserted does not reflect the larger sentiment towards Indian Americans.

Controversy Over Media Footage

In a related incident, the US State Department initially posted a video of Rubio’s response to the racism question on the social media platform X but removed it a few hours later. This incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding discussions of racism and international relations, reflecting the challenges faced in public discourse within the context of bilateral relations.

Rubio’s visit is part of a broader diplomatic effort to strengthen ties between the United States and India, which have allegedly faced turbulence since mid-2022. As he continues his four-day official trip, he is expected to engage in various discussions aimed at recalibrating the two nations’ partnership.

The Secretary of State’s statements aim to reaffirm the commitment of the American administration to its relationship with India, indicating a desire for cooperation amidst intermittent tensions. The visit underscores the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic relations and addressing misunderstandings that may arise in international communications.
