A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning in Kerala’s Kollam district, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to five others. The incident transpired when a tipper lorry, transporting soil, reportedly lost control and crashed into a bus stop at Neeleswaram in Kottarakkara.

According to police reports, the lorry’s impact caused the soil to spill onto people waiting at the bus stop, tragically burying some beneath the debris. Among the deceased was a fifteen-year-old student who was preparing to catch a bus to school. In total, health officials stated that Parthipan, aged fifteen, Harilal, fifty-four, and Ajayakumar, fifty, were pronounced dead upon arrival at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital.

Emergency responders were quick to assess the situation, as efforts were made to ascertain whether anyone remained trapped beneath the soil. Eyewitness accounts described a chaotic scene, with one person reporting that they narrowly escaped serious harm as the lorry approached at high speed.

Of the five individuals injured in the crash, three were reported to be in serious condition. They have been transported to a private hospital in Kollam for specialised medical attention. The injured have been identified as Rishabh, fifteen, Kaushik, fifteen, and Nizam, forty, all of whom sustained significant injuries. Two others, Navaneeth Krishnan, thirteen, and Jiby Mol, fifteen, suffered minor injuries, as reported by officials.

A specialized medical team has been deployed at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital to address potential emergencies arising from this tragic event, comprising experts from essential medical fields such as General Surgery and Orthopaedics.

Health Department officials are reportedly maintaining communication with the private hospitals to ensure the injured receive optimal care and necessary assistance. The minister underscored the government’s commitment to providing comprehensive support for those affected.

Government Responses and Local Community Reactions

Local ministers, including Bindu Krishna and PC Vishnunadh, along with senior Congress leader and MP Kodikunnil Suresh, visited the site of the accident to engage with community members. During these discussions, Vishnunadh assured residents that the government would cover the treatment expenses for the injured. Additionally, he indicated that plans to offer financial support to the families of the deceased would be pursued with the state government.

This incident has raised significant concern within the community and highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures at bus stops. Local authorities continue to gather information and assess the broader implications of the event.
