Protesters from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) conducted a demonstration in Ranchi on August 8, focusing on perceived irregularities in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations. The group aimed to march towards the residence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren but was obstructed by law enforcement.

During the protest, some participants laid down on the roadway, while others attempted to climb on a police vehicle after their progress was halted. This protest is part of a broader movement by ABVP, which has been voicing concerns about the integrity of the examination process.

An ABVP member accused the Jharkhand government of attempting to suppress student-led protests, stating, “Our colleagues have been arrested. This government is busy arresting nationalist students engaged in peaceful protests.” The member also expressed intentions to displace the current government in future elections over these issues.

Opposition’s Response to Government Actions

Babulal Marandi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, criticised the ruling JMM-led government on the same day. He asserted that the administration should not deflect attention from the examination irregularities by engaging in dialogues with the protestors.

Marandi highlighted previous issues related to examination integrity, claiming that the current administration is thwarting candidates’ opportunities for government employment. He emphasised, “The government should initiate dialogue; however, it must not detract from the core issue at hand.” He urged for accountability regarding past irregularities.

The political atmosphere has intensified with the BJP’s involvement, as its leaders demanded the government face the allegations head-on. They indicated that genuine dialogue could lead to resolution, but warned against any diversion from critical matters surrounding the examination irregularities.

Government’s Commitment to Addressing Concerns

A delegation of protesting aspirants from the JPSC and JSSC met with State Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu later in the day. Post-meeting, Minister Sonu announced the establishment of a dedicated email address to gather suggestions from students and other stakeholders regarding policy reform.

Sonu affirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with various student groups to formulate a comprehensive reform policy. “We intend to involve all stakeholders and respond to their concerns based on the feedback received through this email,” he remarked.

The government aims to implement structural changes driven by the input from these aspiring candidates in light of the mounting criticism over examination processes. Minister Sonu confirmed that this initiative is a step toward greater transparency in recruitment processes across the state.
