Thousands Rally In PoJK’s Rawalakot, Demand Justice Over Protest Deaths

The CSR Journal Magazine

Thousands of people from across Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) gathered in Rawalakot on Wednesday, demanding justice for civilians reportedly killed and injured during recent protests and accusing Pakistani authorities of using excessive force to suppress dissent.

The demonstration, which lasted several hours, saw participants carrying banners and raising slogans seeking accountability, protection of civil rights and an end to the use of force against peaceful protesters.

Local political leaders and representatives of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) addressed the gathering, criticising the authorities’ response to the unrest and calling for an independent investigation into the reported deaths and injuries.

Speakers also appealed to the international community and human rights organisations to take note of the situation and support the families of those affected.

Protesters Demand Accountability

The latest rally comes amid heightened tensions in the region following recent protests and a widening confrontation between activists and authorities over political representation and governance issues.

Participants accused Pakistan of maintaining restrictive policies in the territory and urged authorities to ensure justice for those allegedly targeted during the demonstrations.

The Joint Awami Action Committee has emerged as one of the key voices behind the protests, with its members demanding greater political rights and accountability from the administration.

The gathering in Rawalakot was marked by calls for peaceful resistance and renewed demands for an impartial inquiry into the incidents that led to casualties.

Amnesty International Criticises Crackdown

Meanwhile, Amnesty International strongly criticised Pakistan’s response to the unrest, accusing authorities of violating fundamental rights and suppressing peaceful political activity ahead of regional elections scheduled for July 27.

The rights organisation condemned the decision to designate the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) as a “proscribed organisation” under anti-terrorism laws, describing the move as unlawful and disproportionate.

According to Amnesty, the crackdown intensified after negotiations between the group and authorities reportedly broke down over disagreements concerning the composition of the region’s legislature.

The organisation said the action represented a serious infringement on the rights to freedom of association and peaceful assembly.

Communication Restrictions Raise Concerns

On June 5, the same day Pakistan announced elections in the region, authorities reportedly suspended internet and mobile services and imposed movement restrictions across PoJK.

Visitors and tourists were advised to leave the area, while reports suggested that federal paramilitary forces had been deployed to maintain order.

Amnesty International said these measures had effectively isolated the territory and severely limited the flow of information, raising concerns about transparency and access to independent reporting.

The rights body urged Pakistani authorities to end restrictions on communication, respect civil liberties and ensure that all allegations of excessive force are independently investigated.
