Suspense Surrounds Selection Of Next Kerala Chief Minister

The CSR Journal Magazine

The uncertainty surrounding the next Chief Minister of Kerala persists over a week after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) achieved a decisive victory in the state Assembly elections. The results were announced on May 4, yet the Congress leadership has yet to confirm who will lead the Congress Legislature Party. This delay has incited considerable political dialogue both within the party and among allies, as consultations continue in the national capital.

In recent developments, several senior leaders from Kerala have been summoned to New Delhi by the Congress high command to discuss government formation and the chief ministerial selection. Notably, K Muraleedharan, a senior Congress leader and newly elected MLA, has been instructed to report to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters on Tuesday. He indicated that a decision regarding the Chief Minister’s appointment is expected within 48 hours.

Additionally, KPCC vice presidents AP Anil Kumar, Shafi Parambil, and PC Vishnunadh, as well as senior leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, have also been called for discussions. As the current Kerala Assembly term nears its expiration on May 23, pressure mounts on the Congress leadership to expedite the decision-making process.

Contenders and Party Dynamics

The competition for the chief ministerial role is primarily among three prominent Congress leaders: Ramesh Chennithala, KC Venugopal, and VD Satheesan. The Congress high command has engaged in thorough discussions with all three figures in New Delhi over the weekend. High-profile meetings also included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, who consulted with Chennithala, Satheesan, Venugopal, KPCC chief Sunny Joseph, and AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala, Deepa Dasmunsi.

According to sources, a considerable portion of Congress MLAs reportedly supports Venugopal for the chief ministerial position, while Satheesan enjoys a reputation as a popular choice among the public. Ramesh Chennithala, addressing the media on Monday, defended the decision-making delay, characterising it as a necessary democratic process within the party.

Chennithala affirmed that all Congress and UDF workers in Kerala would abide by the decision made by the high command, having conveyed their perspectives. “We have communicated our opinions to the high command. They have taken note of everything. The ultimate decision rests with them,” he stated following his return from New Delhi.

Alliance Partners Express Concern Over Delays

Following the meetings held in New Delhi, Kerala Congress leaders appealed to party members to refrain from protests or displaying support for individual candidates regarding the chief ministerial nomination. This request came amidst growing unease among some UDF allies due to the protracted indecision, even after the alliance’s impressive electoral outcome.

The UDF achieved a total of 102 seats in the 140-member Kerala Assembly, significantly surpassing the two-thirds majority threshold. The Congress secured 63 seats, while the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) gained 22 seats. The Kerala Congress (KEC) obtained eight seats, and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) finished with three seats, highlighting the importance of the allies’ perspectives in the forthcoming power-sharing negotiations.

As political dynamics evolve, the Congress leadership faces mounting pressure to reach a resolution. The forthcoming appointment of the Chief Minister remains a pivotal moment, with implications for both the party and the state’s governance going forward.
