Sourav Ganguly Faces Backlash From Fans Following Meeting with BJP Leaders

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sourav Ganguly, affectionately known as the “Prince of Kolkata,” is currently encountering backlash due to his recent interactions with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After the BJP’s significant success in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Ganguly’s cordial meeting with BJP leader PN Pathak in Kolkata sparked discontent among some of his supporters. Many fans have accused him of opportunism, questioning his motives and loyalty.

Images from the meeting were shared by Pathak on social media platform X, highlighting the aftermath of the BJP’s impressive victory, where they secured 207 out of 293 seats. This has led to substantial criticism, with opponents labelling Ganguly as “selfish” and questioning why he hasn’t aligned himself with the party earlier.

Critics have drawn unfavourable comparisons between Ganguly and Ashoke Dinda, a former Indian cricketer who joined the BJP in 2021 and faced significant opposition without retreating. They assert that Ganguly’s history of aligning with the prevailing party raises questions about his integrity in the political landscape.

Ganguly’s Cricketing Legacy

Born in Kolkata in 1972, Sourav Ganguly made his debut in professional cricket in the late 1980s, representing Bengal in the Ranji Trophy from 1989 to 1991. He gained national recognition with his One Day International (ODI) debut against the West Indies in 1992, though he was initially dropped from the team. His career took a notable turn during the 1996 Tour of England when he made his Test debut and scored a century, establishing himself as a dominant presence in Indian cricket.

Ganguly was appointed captain of the Indian cricket team in 2000 and led the squad to several significant achievements, including the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy victory and a notable run to the finals of the 2003 ODI World Cup, culminating in a healthy legacy. Following his retirement from professional cricket, he continued to influence the sport, serving as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Ganguly was eligible to vote in the West Bengal elections and participated at a polling station in Behala Purba on April 29. When asked about the expected outcome of the elections, he expressed uncertainty, indicating that even divine intervention could not predict the results.

Public Reaction and Future Prospects

In the wake of the BJP’s electoral success, Ganguly has faced increasing scrutiny for his perceived lack of a clear political stance. Social media reactions indicate a divide among fans, with some hurling accusations of opportunism, suggesting that he has chosen to benefit from political success without taking a definitive stand.

Among the criticisms, some BJP supporters have expressed strong disapproval of any potential move to induct Ganguly into the party. Warnings have been issued online, asserting that he does not merit an opportunity within the BJP due to his previous reluctance to engage deeply in politics or take a public stance against opposition parties.

Conversely, there are voices defending Ganguly, arguing that he has collaborated with various administrations to promote cricket in Bengal without committing to a specific political affiliation. The contrasting opinions on social media highlight the challenge he faces in navigating both his cricketing legacy and a burgeoning political landscape.
