Assam is facing significant challenges due to ongoing floods, with the death toll climbing to 98 as of Saturday. This follows the reported death of one individual in Charaideo district. Officials have indicated that the number of people affected by the floods stands at 1,55,849, which is a decrease from over 1.68 lakh just one day earlier.

Floodwaters continue to impact 13 districts. Notably, Golaghat is the most severely affected district, with approximately 58,750 individuals reporting losses. Sivasagar follows closely with 48,286 affected, while Jorhat has seen around 25,259 people impacted by the disaster.

The Assam government has begun to mobilise for a detailed assessment of the flood damage, starting from Sunday. This action aims to expedite the release of funds necessary for rehabilitation efforts in the four districts hardest hit in eastern Assam.

Government Initiatives for Relief and Rehabilitation

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced plans to conduct a thorough door-to-door assessment of damage within the most affected areas including Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, and Charaideo. This assessment, scheduled to occur between August 9 and 30, is intended to ensure that all affected households receive proper attention and aid.

The government has established 55 relief camps across the affected regions, providing shelter to more than 10,000 displaced individuals. In addition, 18 relief distribution centres are actively supplying essential resources to the impacted population. These efforts aim to alleviate immediate hardship while long-term solutions are planned.

Reports also indicate that the floods have submerged 10,748.64 hectares of agricultural land, affecting over 47,000 livestock. The scale of the disaster poses serious implications for food security and economic stability in the region.

Future Plans and Financial Assistance

In light of the ongoing crisis, the government is focused on securing an accurate estimate of the financial assistance needed for rehabilitation. Chief Minister Sarma expects this assessment to be completed by September 10. Once the financial requirements are clear, the government will begin disbursing the necessary funds to affected families.

Officials have assured the public that maximum financial relief permissible by government standards will be provided. This systematic approach aims to foster a sense of security among those impacted and facilitate quicker recovery.

The government remains committed to ensuring that no household is overlooked during the assessment process, thereby reinforcing the urgency of effective disaster response and recovery strategies. As the situation evolves, officials continue to monitor conditions and provide updates to the public on relief efforts and resource availability.
