RG Kar Victim’s Mother Blames Previous TMC Government in West Bengal For 12-Year-Old Girl’s Rape Murder in Baruipur

The CSR Journal Magazine

The mother of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College rape-murder victim has reacted to the incident of a twelve-year-old girl being raped and murdered in Baruipur, West Bengal. Ratna Debnath expressed her anguish over the incident, laying blame on the state’s past governments. Debnath, who is also a BJP MLA representing Panihati, pointed to the rise in such crimes as a failure of both the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) administrations. She argued that these governments had neglected vital areas like education and healthcare while seemingly promoting gambling and alcohol consumption among the youth.

Debnath conveyed her deep sorrow for the victim’s family during a media interaction, stating, “I spent the entire night crying because another set of parents had to endure the same fate.” Her comments were made shortly after she called upon the BJP government to ensure prompt justice in the RG Kar case, highlighting that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had previously assured her that the legal process would be expedited within a week following the BJP’s victory.

Public Outcry and Lynching Incident

In light of the public uproar over the crime, Debnath indicated her confidence that the authorities would assign severe penalties to the individuals responsible. She condemned the lynching of the prime suspect, asserting that taking the law into one’s own hands was unacceptable and that citizens should have instead reported him to the police. “After the RG Kar incident, people have become so angry that they did not spare him,” she remarked, denouncing the violence as a misguided reaction stemming from fear that justice would not be served if the suspect were handed over to law enforcement.

In her discourse, Debnath dismissed allegations suggesting that a local BJP leader was complicit in the affair, asserting that many individuals once aligned with the TMC had begun to identify as BJP supporters following the party’s recent electoral success.

Criticism of Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

Debnath defended the police’s decision to block former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from visiting the incident site, arguing that such a visit would have been unproductive. “What would she have achieved by going there?” Debnath questioned, alleging that Banerjee would likely have offered compensation to the victim’s family while seeking to provide protection for the accused, a common practice according to her claims.

Linking the current case to past incidents, Debnath accused Banerjee of consistently failing to secure justice for victims, despite holding key positions in the government, including overseeing health. She questioned the prolonged legal processes in her daughter’s case and the allocation of taxpayer funds to defend certain civic volunteers. “People no longer believe such actions,” she asserted, insisting that those responsible for the crime must face legal repercussions.

Details of the Tragic Incident and Ongoing Investigations

The alleged rape and murder of the 12-year-old girl took place on July 6, 2026, in the Surjyapur locality of Baruipur. According to police sources, the girl had left her home on the afternoon of July 6 to purchase a gift for a friend’s birthday but never returned. Her family reported that four individuals forcibly took her away, prompting them to search throughout the night. They also accused local police of not adequately responding to their distress calls.

On the morning of July 7, locals apprehended one of the suspects, who allegedly revealed the location of the victim’s body. Following this, residents discovered the girl’s body inside a sack near a pond in the Surjyapur Haat area. This led to an outbreak of violence, during which the accused man was reportedly assaulted by enraged locals, resulting in his death from injuries sustained. Police stated that local BJP member Shantanu Mandal was detained and four others were arrested concerning the case.

The incident has taken a political turn, with the TMC claiming that Banerjee was placed under “house arrest” to obstruct her from visiting Baruipur. In response, Chief Minister Adhikari assured the victim’s father over a phone call that justice would be pursued swiftly.
