A 20-year-old pregnant tribal woman was reportedly raped in the disabled coach of the Mahananda Express while travelling from Delhi to her home in Alipurduar, West Bengal. The unfortunate incident took place as the train approached Kalchini in the Alipurduar district, with the woman in the almost empty compartment when the alleged attack occurred.

Witnesses from an adjacent coach reported hearing the woman’s screams and shouts when the train neared Hasimara. The railway staff immediately alerted the railway helpline, prompting security personnel to prepare for an interception when the train arrived at Alipurduar station.

Response from Authorities and Rescue Operation

In a distressed moment, the woman managed to contact her husband and informed him about the assault. Upon reaching the station, he found her and ensured that she received immediate assistance. Meanwhile, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) took swift action, detaining the suspect on arrival.

The suspect has been identified as Gautam Mahato, a resident of Rangia in Assam. Following the woman’s complaint, the police promptly registered a case of rape against him. GRP Superintendent of Police Indrabadan Jha confirmed that the railway electrical staff’s timely response played a crucial role in the rescue operation.

“The woman was rescued. Based on the woman’s complaint, the accused has been arrested, and a case of rape has been registered,” Jha stated, underscoring the importance of vigilance in such situations.

Legal Proceedings Against the Accused

The alleged perpetrator was brought before a local court, which has since remanded him to five days of police custody for further investigation. Authorities are currently assessing the details surrounding the alleged assault and are gathering statements from witnesses and involved parties.

Police are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served. The safety of passengers, particularly vulnerable individuals such as pregnant women, remains a priority for the railway authorities in West Bengal.
