Gitanjali J Angmo, the spouse of activist Sonam Wangchuk, has expressed her discontent regarding the increased police presence at Medanta Hospital, particularly outside the intensive care unit (ICU). On July 25, Angmo took to social media platform X to query the authority under which police were limiting access to her husband, especially since a court had previously confirmed that he was not under detention.

In her post, Angmo detailed that uniformed officers were stationed at various points in the hospital, including the main entrance, reception area, and lifts. She questioned their role, asking whether the police were meant to protect citizens or to control them on behalf of powerful elites. Through her statements, she encouraged a broader discussion among citizens about the nature of police functions in a democratic society.

Wangchuk Ends Hunger Strike After Court Assurance

Sonam Wangchuk concluded a 26-day hunger strike on July 24, following a written assurance from the Union Government addressing concerns related to the NEET examination and systemic reforms in India’s competitive testing framework. Wangchuk’s wife, Angmo, had previously highlighted the health risks he faced during the strike, noting that he had lost 11 kg, predominantly muscle mass, during this period.

In a video message released on the same day, Wangchuk addressed his critics, asserting that he should not need to justify his decision to end the hunger strike or prove his dedication to the cause. He described the toll the fast had taken on him, mentioning significant weight loss and damage to his physical health, emphasising that he fasted for the benefit of students.

His hunger strike was deemed an act of sacrifice, as he sought to draw attention to issues affecting students and their concerns about the examination system. The culmination of his fast took place in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh at the hospital.

Protests Continue Against Union Education Minister

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has vowed to persist with their agitation until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. Activists, including Ashutosh Ranka, have alleged that Delhi Police were obstructing the delivery of food and support to protesters at their site at Jantar Mantar. Ranka issued a statement on X, insisting that police could not impede the public’s ability to gather or assist the demonstrators.

CJP representatives claim that during their discussions with Union Ministers, the government requested additional time to consider their demand for Pradhan’s resignation. This meeting lasted nearly two hours, illustrating the ongoing negotiations between the government and the protesters.

The activists maintain that their movement will not relent until their demands are met. The atmosphere at the protest site is reported to be tense, reflecting the broader frustrations among citizens regarding educational policies and governmental accountability shared by the CJP and its supporters.
