Activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced his discharge from a hospital, indicating his intention to visit Raj Ghat in New Delhi to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi before returning to Ladakh. In a post shared on X, Wangchuk expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his hospital stay and his desire to honour Gandhi, a significant figure in India’s history.

Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

Upon his discharge, Wangchuk stated that he would first visit Raj Ghat to pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi, a ritual he previously followed before embarking on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar after coming back from Switzerland. He noted the importance of this visit as a personal tradition linked to his activism. Wangchuk emphasised the symbolic nature of paying tribute at Raj Ghat before continuing his journey home to Ladakh.

Reflecting on his activism, he recalled how he had visited the same site prior to commencing his fast, thereby linking his current actions to his previous efforts in advocating for educational reforms and other social issues. He underscored his commitment to remaining engaged with the cause he represents.

Campaign Success and Resignation of Education Minister

Wangchuk’s campaign has recently garnered significant attention, culminating in the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of Education, amidst ongoing protests related to the NEET-UG 2026 examination paper leak. This high-profile resignation is seen as a pivotal moment, reflecting the impact of prolonged protests and the involvement of activists like Wangchuk.

The protests, which took place over 37 days, originated from a satirical social media initiative associated with the Cockroach Janata Party. After garnering substantial public support, and following assurances from the government regarding their demands, the protest at Jantar Mantar shifted, and the group ultimately decided to withdraw. Notably, the protests were marked by the lively participation of youth, featuring creative banners and slogans aimed at drawing attention to their cause.

Wangchuk’s involvement lent further momentum to the movement; after joining the protests and undertaking a 26-day hunger strike, he became a leading figure in the agitation. His dedication to the cause resonated with many across the country and was pivotal in mobilising support for the campaign.
