“Silence is Deafening”: Anurag Kashyap Supports Sonam Wangchuk, Slams Government Inaction

The CSR Journal Magazine

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has voiced his support for activist Sonam Wangchuk amid the latter’s ongoing hunger strike. In a recent social media post, Kashyap expressed discontent over the government’s silence regarding Wangchuk’s actions, labelling it as “deafening.” He commended Wangchuk for his bravery, asserting that only individuals with profound empathy and a strong commitment to justice would resort to such extreme measures.

Kashyap highlighted the historical significance of hunger strikes, indicating that they were once respected forms of protest. He conveyed his concern for the current state of societal indifference and noted that this apathy is troubling. Through his Instagram story, the director remarked, “People don’t go on hunger strike just like that.”

He further stated, “I do not have the courage to do what Sonam Wangchuk is doing. But the silence from the powers that be is deafening, to the point that it is proof of their guilt and murderous intent.” Kashyap articulated his solidarity with Wangchuk, noting his admiration for the activist’s strong moral compass.

Wangchuk’s Ongoing Hunger Strike

Sonam Wangchuk has now completed 17 days of uninterrupted fasting, rapidly becoming the focal point of the protest movement. The 59-year-old activist initiated his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, demanding accountability in the wake of the NEET-UG paper leak scandal. Coordinated by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the protests are aimed at securing the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In response to Wangchuk’s deteriorating health during the hunger strike, a petition has been submitted to the Delhi High Court. This legal request calls for urgent medical intervention, suggesting that authorities should consider force-feeding Wangchuk to end his fasting. The situation surrounding the activist’s condition has drawn widespread media attention.

Visuals depicting a visibly frail Wangchuk resting on a white mattress, surrounded by medical personnel, have circulated widely in recent days. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke has been a continuous presence at the protest site, providing support during this challenging episode.

Reactions from Other Public Figures

Anurag Kashyap is among several notable personalities who have publicly expressed their support for Sonam Wangchuk. Other figures, including Zeenat Aman, Abhay Deol, Omi Vaidya, and Rubina Dilaik, have also voiced their solidarity, amplifying the call for action and accountability.

As Wangchuk’s hunger strike continues, the protests at Jantar Mantar have drawn increasing attention from the media and the public. Many are now closely monitoring the developments concerning both Wangchuk’s health and the government’s response to the growing calls for change.

The circumstances surrounding this protest raise significant questions about governance and public accountability. As the situation evolves, the roles of both activists and government representatives are under scrutiny.
