Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced on July 21, that financial aid will be provided to the victims affected by the collapse of the Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project tunnel. Following the tragic incident, he stated that a thorough investigation would be initiated to hold accountable any parties found negligent in their duties.

During a briefing at the site, Tamang noted the prompt response of the state administration after the accident, which took place around 1.30 PM on July 20. Two workers managed to escape from the scene; however, 25 others were trapped in the tunnel before rescue operations commenced.

Tamang remarked on the swift mobilisation of essential rescue services, including police and both the National and State Disaster Response Forces, to address the emergency. He confirmed that all 25 workers trapped in the tunnel had been safely rescued.

Details of the Incident and Casualties

Reports indicate that the tunnel collapse occurred as a result of a sudden explosion triggered by suspected methane gas, which was released from the surrounding rock formations. This incident led to the filling of the tunnel with harmful gases and dense fumes, complicating the rescue efforts.

The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) confirmed that the tragic event resulted in the death of ten workers, while 25 individuals were initially trapped. The NHPC also stated that emergency protocols were immediately activated, and rescue operations were conducted in collaboration with various local and national authorities.

Senior officials from NHPC arrived at the site to oversee the rescue operations and provide assistance to the affected families. A comprehensive investigation is set to be undertaken in order to ascertain the specific cause of the incident.

Government Response and Support Initiatives

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar expressed his condolences and assured support for the ongoing rescue efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Chief Minister Tamang to discuss the situation, announcing relief measures from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

Modi declared an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased worker’s family and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the explosion. This financial aid aims to support the victims’ families during this challenging time.

Rescue operations faced significant challenges due to heavy rainfall and the potential for additional gas accumulation inside the tunnel. Authorities have deployed expert teams to assess the chemical and gas levels in the area, ensuring that safety precautions are prioritised while investigations proceed.

As rescue operations continue, the state government reiterates its commitment to transparency and accountability. Tamang has emphasised that strict action will be taken against the executing company if any negligence is uncovered during the inquiry.
