Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to assist families affected by floods in Assam. On July 25, he conducted an on-ground assessment of relief efforts in Sivasagar district, focusing on the needs of displaced families at various relief camps. According to a press release, he directed officials to ensure the provision of uninterrupted access to essential services, including healthcare, food, and safe drinking water.

During his visit to the relief camp located at Lakhimi Nagar ME School, Sonowal interacted with displaced individuals to evaluate their well-being and monitored the supply of necessary materials. He urged responsible authorities to be vigilant so that no flood-affected family experiences difficulties in acquiring basic necessities during this challenging time.

The Union Minister also assessed conditions at Bir Lachit Borphukan College in Bihubor, another relief camp where he conversed with affected families regarding their needs. He reviewed arrangements for food, drinking water, and other vital relief supplies.

Government Coordination for Timely Assistance

Speaking at the relief camps, Sonowal highlighted the close collaboration between the Central and State Governments in providing rapid assistance to every affected individual. “The Government of India, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stands resolutely with the people of Assam in these trying times. Both levels of government are working together efficiently to ensure that all necessary help reaches those affected promptly,” he remarked.

Sonowal expressed confidence in the resilience of the Assamese populace, emphasising that collective efforts and public participation would play a crucial role in overcoming the current crisis. “Natural disasters not only challenge our resilience but also enhance our spirit of unity and compassion. Through coordinated efforts among governments, voluntary organisations, and our citizens, we will navigate this difficult phase and enable every affected family to rebuild their lives,” he stated.

Earlier that day, the Union Minister launched a flood relief mission by the Assam Olympic Association from Jalan Outdoor Stadium in Dibrugarh. The relief convoy, aimed at assisting flood victims in Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat districts, is delivering essential supplies such as food and clothing.

Emphasis on Community-Led Humanitarian Efforts

Sonowal commended the community-driven humanitarian initiatives that are supplementing the ongoing relief efforts by both Central and State Governments. He remarked that the collective response to this crisis showcases the strength of shared responsibility. “Every contribution—be it from government bodies, civil society groups, or volunteers—brings hope to families enduring significant hardships. I appreciate everyone who has stepped forward to offer assistance during this time,” he noted in the press release.

During his visit to Sivasagar, Sonowal was accompanied by several prominent individuals, including Assam Cabinet Ministers Bimal Borah, Sushanta Borgohain, and Keshab Mahanta, along with Assam BJP President and Member of Parliament Dilip Saikia, as well as MLAs Diplu Ranjan Sharma and Taranga Gogoi. Their presence underscored the government’s comprehensive approach to addressing the flood situation in the region.
