Russia Launches Ballistic Missile Attack On Kyiv, Air Defences Activated

The CSR Journal Magazine

Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early on Thursday, prompting air raid alerts and the activation of air defence systems, according to Ukrainian officials.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a storage facility in the city’s western suburbs was hit, while debris from intercepted missiles fell on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. The attack came as Ukrainian authorities warned residents to remain in shelters amid an ongoing aerial assault.

Air Force Warns Of Ballistic Missiles And Drone Waves

Ukraine’s Air Force said on Telegram that at least eight ballistic missiles were heading towards Kyiv and warned that additional missiles were approaching the capital.

Authorities urged residents to remain in shelters as air defence systems responded to the incoming threats.

Air raid alerts were also issued in several other regions, including Vinnytsia Oblast.

The Air Force further warned of multiple waves of Russian Shahed-type drones heading towards Ukrainian cities.

Explosions were also reported in the northeastern city of Kharkiv following drone strikes, while ballistic missiles continued targeting Kyiv.

Attack Comes Amid Political Changes

The latest assault came as Ukraine was reacting to the dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was removed from office after serving for less than a year.

Kyiv Hit Repeatedly In Recent Weeks

The latest strike follows a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack carried out overnight on July 14, which Ukrainian authorities said killed at least seven people and injured 78 others.

During that assault, ballistic missiles struck Kyiv, damaging 16 locations across the capital, including a school and a civilian enterprise.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said no fatalities were reported in Kyiv during the July 14 attack, although Russian strikes also damaged critical infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zhytomyr and Odesa regions.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Kyiv has now come under Russian attack seven times in July.

Among the deadliest incidents was a strike on July 2 that killed more than 30 people and injured over 100 others. Another large-scale attack on July 6 left at least 26 people dead.

Russia Says Military Facilities Were Targeted

The Russian Defence Ministry said the latest strikes were aimed at military manufacturing facilities producing long-range missiles and drones.

Moscow has said such operations are intended to weaken Ukraine’s ability to launch long-range attacks on Russian territory, including strikes on oil infrastructure that Russian officials and Western analysts say have disrupted fuel supplies and affected military logistics.
