Rudraprayag district administration is ramping up efforts to ensure safety and convenience as the Kanwar Yatra approaches. Various arrangements are being made to facilitate a smooth pilgrimage for devotees. District Magistrate Vishal Mishra has instructed police and relevant departments to ensure security, manage traffic efficiently, and maintain law and order during this significant event.

Mishra emphasised that the administration’s highest priority is to provide a safe and well-organised journey for all participants. He noted that the ongoing Kedarnath Dham Yatra was proceeding smoothly, having faced temporary interruptions due to recent rainfall alerts that necessitated the halting of pilgrims at secure locations.

Officials are gearing up for the anticipated Kanwar Yatra, with monitoring mechanisms in place. The police have been directed to create a comprehensive traffic management plan, and additional police forces will be deployed along key routes. A disaster management control room will oversee the entirety of the Yatra, ensuring a coordinated response to any incidents.

Weather Conditions Affecting Kedarnath Yatra

Severe weather conditions earlier this week led to disruptions along the Kedarnath Yatra route, with heavy rainfall contributing to rising water levels in the Sharda River. In response, local authorities promptly issued advisories, worked to clear blocked roads, and enhanced disaster preparedness measures to assist those travelling to the pilgrimage site.

Superintendent of Police Niharika Tomar reported that an orange alert has been declared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the Kedarnath pilgrimage during this period. The overnight rainfall resulted in road blockages at several locations, including Sirobagad, Banswara, and Mungatiya, making it imperative for the administration to act swiftly to restore accessibility.

According to Tomar, disaster management teams, along with the police and district administration, responded rapidly to reports of blocked routes. The affected stretches were cleared, enabling the resumption of traffic. Guidelines and advisories are consistently provided to pilgrims regarding weather and health conditions as recommended by the IMD and the government.

Precautionary Measures in Champawat District

In addition to Rudraprayag, similar precautions have been implemented in the Champawat district’s Banbasa area, where the Irrigation Department issued a red alert for the Banbasa Sharda Barrage due to an alarming rise in water levels caused by continuous rainfall in the Kumaon region. This led to the decision to restrict movement in the border area.

Vehicular traffic across the Sharda Barrage has been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure. Assistant Engineer Prashant Kumar stated that over one lakh cusecs of water were released from the Banbasa Sharda Barrage in light of the persistent heavy rains in the hills.

Authorities have urged residents, as well as pilgrims and travellers, to adhere strictly to official advisories and to refrain from entering high-risk areas until weather conditions improve. The emphasis remains on ensuring the safety of all individuals during this critical period.
