The Kanwar Yatra, led by BJP MLA Bhawna Bohra, has seen a remarkable increase in participant numbers, with nearly 700 devotees now involved, including 16 members from the Baiga tribal community. This annual pilgrimage spans 151 kilometres from Amarkantak to Bhoramdeo and began on August 10, with devotees collecting holy water from the Narmada River.

The yatra is part of a devotional tradition where participants honour the goddess Maa Narmada before proceeding towards the Bhoramdeo Temple. The increase in numbers was notable on the second day, as reported by local sources.

On this second day, the yatra began its journey from Lamni village, located within the Achanakmar Sanctuary area. The organisers noted that the number of participants had risen from around 500 on the first day to close to 700 on the second day, reflecting significant local interest.

MLA Bhawna Bohra provided insights into the experiences of participants during the yatra. She mentioned that on the first day, the group covered approximately 30 kilometres, while the current day saw a considerable turnout of nearly 700 Kanwariyas, despite the challenging terrain. The pilgrims navigate through pebbles, stones, forests, and bodies of water, all while carrying Kanwars, which instills a sense of determination in their hearts.

Bohra highlighted the participation of Baiga tribals as a significant aspect of this year’s pilgrimage, noting the enthusiasm shown by women and young girls. The presence of the Baiga community, in addition to other devotees, has added a unique character to this yatra, fostering communal spirit and unity.

Chatushnam, a participant from the Baiga tribe, expressed admiration for Bohra, referring to her not just as a political leader but as a maternal figure who inspires them to engage in this spiritual journey. He acknowledged the importance of honouring their cultural heritage and religious practices during this pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage Filled with Devotion and Challenges

Amarkantak has transformed into a hub of spirituality as over 500 devotees chanted slogans such as ‘Har Har Mahadev’, ‘Bol Bam’, and ‘Narmada Maiya Ki Jai’ as they commenced their padayatra on Monday. This conduct aligns with the traditions observed during the holy month of Shravan, a period deemed auspicious for such spiritual activities.

The yatra involves participants travelling on foot while managing considerable physical strains posed by the terrain. The devotion displayed, particularly through the participation of women and younger generations, signifies a broader commitment to cultural and spiritual values.

This year’s Kanwar Yatra has notably highlighted the collaborative effort of diverse groups, bringing together various segments of society. The enthusiasm surrounding this pilgrimage continues to reverberate throughout the region, illustrating the deep-rooted religious sentiments that accompany it.
