Rajasthan’s Mangala Oilfield Output Rises by 2,000 Barrels Per Day Amid Global Supply Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

As the world struggles with crude oil supply and fuel shortages, the Mangala oilfield in Barmer, Rajasthan, has recorded outstanding output, adding 2,000 barrels per day by using advanced exploration technologies. Made in 2004 and operational since 2009, is India’s largest onshore oil producer.

Advanced Techniques Unlock New Potential

The Mangala block that is being operated by Cairn Oil & Gas, said that the production has gained achievement through advanced targeted interventions by geoscience teams. The teams explored new engineering techniques that were not previously available for the mature wells. For broader redevelopment, sidetracking technique was adopted by the company, in this technique the existing wells were redirected to reach reservoirs which was untapped. This technique improves recovery, reduces operational costs and limits surface disturbance. Other advanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques like polymer injection and alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding are also being used. These techniques help improve the flow of trapped oil, increase extraction efficiency and extend the productive life of mature wells.

Experts See Domestic Production Rise as Import Cushion

The company’s official statement indicated that in the initial phase a redeveloped well started producing close to 2,000 barrels per day, clearly demonstrating the efficiency of the advanced technologies. Following the success of the initial phase, the company now plans to scale these interventions across other parts of the field.

Reacting to the latest update from the Mangala oil field, Energy experts noted that even this increase in production from a mature field like Mangala can help address the short-term global crisis. An increase in domestic production will help reduce dependency on imports and stabilise supply chains.

Mangala Field’s Production Journey

Since the Mangala oilfield began extraction, more than 500 million barrels of crude oil have been extracted. Extraction was strong in the early years, peaking in 2014 with 200,000 barrels per day. However, between 2015 and 2020, the output fell to between 170,000 and 130,000 barrels per day. And this downward continued following years, the production reduced to 100,000 and 80,000 barrels per day between 2021–2025.

While the maturing oilfield were assumed to have lost the capacity, this latest technological intervention has optimized recovery, and regained its importance in the India’s energy landscape.
