Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, expressed profound concerns regarding India’s examination and testing framework, describing it as being “hollowed out by termites.” Gandhi’s comments, made on July 21, were directed at the ongoing unrest among students aimed at showcasing deficiencies within the educational structure.

Speaking to reporters, Gandhi highlighted that the protests orchestrated by the Concerned Joint Platform (CJP) were intended to spotlight the systemic failures the youth are currently facing. He stated, “The entire country knows the education system and testing system are broken; it has ceased to exist,” pressing the urgent need for reforms.

Reiterating the student’s grievances, he mentioned the increasing frustrations among youths about the ineffective testing processes. Gandhi has frequently presented the case for educational reform, questioning the silence of the Prime Minister regarding significant issues raised by students.

Concerns Over Parliamentary Discussions

Gandhi also raised alarms regarding the government’s purported obstruction of discussions about educational issues in Parliament. He claimed, “We went to the Speaker and said, ‘Look, we want to discuss the student issue,’ and the Speaker told us that to hold a discussion, he has to ask the government.” This revelation sparked concerns about parliamentary procedure and transparency in governance.

Highlighting the importance of student-related matters in legislative discussions, he expressed disappointment over the perceived restriction on free debate. Gandhi argued that addressing educational challenges is crucial for shaping the future of the youth in India.

Furthermore, he condemned the police action during the protest, asserting that it reflected poorly on the government’s stance towards the youth. “What is being done—people being beaten and thrashed—this is completely un-Indian,” he stated, emphasising the necessity for respectful dialogue instead of repressive measures.

Visit to Injured Protesters and Ongoing Health Concerns

Following his statements in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, visited Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital to meet CJP protesters who were injured during the confrontation with police. His visit underscored the physical toll of the protests on students advocating for educational reform.

His visit coincided with concerns for the health of Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent figure in the protests, who is currently receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. Wangchuk, involved in a hunger strike demanding accountability concerning the NEET exam paper leak, has been reported to have stable vital signs despite ongoing medical issues.

According to the hospital’s latest update, Wangchuk’s blood sugar remains low, and his potassium levels were recorded at 3.2 mEq/L. Although he is receiving oral rehydration therapy and potassium supplements, he has declined intravenous fluids and glucose. The vigilance of the medical team at Safdarjung Hospital reflects the seriousness of his condition following days of protest and fasting.
