Rahul Gandhi, an MP from the Congress party and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has publicly condemned the violence directed at students involved in protests in Jharkhand. This statement was made on August 10, 2026, amidst ongoing demonstrations against alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations.

Gandhi emphasised that peaceful protests should not be met with force and reiterated his support for the students. He stated, “We are against violence towards peaceful protesters,” communicating his clear position on the matter to reporters. His remarks pointed to the broader right to peaceful assembly and expression in India.

The demonstrations in question occurred during a ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ march in Ranchi, where the JPSC-JSSC Reform Morcha led the charge against the alleged mishandling of recruitment processes. Gandhi’s condemnation of the violence reflects a larger concern about the treatment of peaceful protestors across the country.

Details of the Protests and Police Response

Clashes broke out between the student protesters and the police during the march, prompting law enforcement to resort to methods such as tear gas, water cannons, and lathi charge. This escalation occurred when part of the protesting crowd allegedly attempted to breach police barricades while heading towards the Jharkhand Assembly.

Ravindra Paswan, a student leader, has called for restraint among protesters, emphasising their intention to resolve the issues through peaceful and constitutional means. He has stated that while the majority aim to uphold peaceful protest, there are concerns about certain individuals allegedly influencing the direction of the movement in a negative manner.

Ranchi City Superintendent of Police, Paras Rana, acknowledged that whilst most students were demonstrating peacefully, he reported that a minority had engaged in aggressive behaviour, including damaging barricades and hurling stones at officers. Rana affirmed that about 90 per cent of the demonstrators acted peacefully, while the remaining 10 per cent were reportedly uncooperative, prompting police to exercise restraint given the context of the situation.

Demands and Ongoing Actions by Protesters

The protesting students are advocating for the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination, demanding a formal investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment process, and calling for comprehensive reforms to the system. The calls for action highlight what the students perceive as serious injustices affecting their future opportunities.

In a significant development, Devendra Nath Mahto, leader of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha, who has been on a hunger strike for nine days, joined the protests. He described the agitation as evolving into a “mass movement”, indicating a deepening resolve among students to see their demands acknowledged and acted upon by the authorities.

The situation has attracted the attention of the Enforcement Directorate, which has initiated an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in relation to the recruitment examination irregularities. This action adds another layer to the ongoing narrative surrounding education and integrity within recruitment processes in Jharkhand.
