Two individuals sadly died during the Rath Yatra celebrations in Puri, Odisha, on July 16. The incidents occurred as thousands of devotees gathered to partake in the rituals associated with this significant religious event. Reports indicate that several other participants fell ill during the festivities.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that seven individuals experienced health issues during the festival. They were promptly evacuated by personnel on duty and transported to local medical facilities for treatment. While the majority of these individuals were subsequently discharged after receiving necessary care, the circumstances leading to the fatalities remain under investigation by relevant authorities.

It was indicated that one male devotee, aged over 60, tragically succumbed to health complications, with the precise cause of death yet to be determined. In an unrelated event, another male devotee over 35 suffered a cardiac arrest; despite immediate medical attention, the individual passed away shortly after. Additionally, many attendees experienced rain-related illnesses due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Large Gatherings Amid Adverse Weather

The festival attracted an estimated 8 to 9 lakh devotees from across Odisha, the country, and abroad, demonstrating significant faith in the deities despite the inclement weather. Odisha’s Health Minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling addressed concerns regarding safety, asserting that there was no stampede during the event.

Dr Mahaling stated that a post-mortem examination is currently underway to investigate the suffocation-related death. He underscored the arrangements made to ensure the safety and well-being of the attendees and dismissed allegations of mismanagement as baseless. The festival included multiple sacred rituals, including the pulling of three impressive chariots, all of which proceeded without any disruptions.

The Odisha government undertook extensive planning to facilitate the smooth conduct of the event, coordinating with various departments such as Police, Health, Fire Services, and others to ensure preparation for potential challenges. This comprehensive approach included continuous monitoring, a strong security presence, and the establishment of medical facilities to address any health issues promptly.

Successful Management of the Festival

As the day progressed, instances of fatigue, dehydration, and minor health complaints were reported, primarily linked to the large crowds and persistent rainfall. The Advisor to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Prakash Mishra, emphasised that no stampede had occurred, noting that in large gatherings, some individuals may experience breathlessness. Although seven such cases were recorded, the majority recovered with assistance.

The Rath Yatra, celebrated annually in Puri, is considered one of India’s most revered religious occasions. This year marks the 149th Rath Yatra, which commenced on July 16 and will conclude with the Bahuda Yatra on July 24. The deities, Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, are carried from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in grand chariots, an act believed to bring blessings and spiritual merit to devotees.

The ceremonial return of the deities to the Jagannath Temple is scheduled for July 27, culminating the nine-day festival. Preparations and management reflect the significance attributed to this event by devotees across numerous regions.
