The CSR Journal Magazine

In compliance with the directions issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjab Police has undertaken a significant initiative to manage unclaimed vehicles. Over the duration of one month, they have successfully disposed of 7,402 impounded vehicles. This effort aims to deal with the backlog of unclaimed vehicles located within police stations across the state.

Prior to the commencement of this disposal initiative, the police held in custody approximately 55,721 vehicles. The recent actions have markedly reduced this number, aligning with judicial requirements for timely vehicle disposal. The intensive disposal drive underscores the police’s commitment to adhering to the court’s directives.

Increase in Impounded Vehicles

The operation has coincided with heightened statewide checks for traffic violations and illegal activities, which have resulted in the impounding of an additional 3,355 vehicles over the month. This rise has brought the total number of vehicles under police custody to 59,076. The thorough follow-up on disposal cases has enabled the police to reduce their custodian responsibilities significantly.

Punjab Police’s Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, highlighted the efficiency with which the disposal process was managed, stating that the increased monitoring of vehicles and rigorous actions against offenders have been a focal point of their operational strategy. The disposal drive aimed not only at clearing backlogs but also at ensuring effective management of ongoing enforcement efforts.

As a part of the continued legal processing, there are currently 8,121 vehicle applications, excluding those associated with Section 52A of the NDPS Act, under examination. Additionally, 1,276 applications regarding vehicles under Section 52A remain pending, awaiting proper legal validation related to inventory and photography.

District-Wise Breakdown of Vehicle Disposal

The vehicle disposal drive has been carried out across various districts and commissionerates. In Jalandhar Commissionerate, 779 vehicles were cleared from a pool of 5,993. In Moga, the police managed to dispose of 697 vehicles out of 2,367 impounded vehicles, and in Bathinda, 631 vehicles were disposed of from a total of 3,008. Each district has prominently participated in this significant effort.

Ferozepur reported the disposal of 586 vehicles out of 2,649 impounded, while Ludhiana (Rural) cleared 538 from a count of 1,618. The Ludhiana Commissionerate processed 460 vehicles from its total of 7,471. Tarn Taran also contributed by disposing of 302 vehicles from a total of 2,033, and Fazilka cleared 283 vehicles from a pool of 2,216.

In response to the ongoing initiative, Special DGP, Law and Order (Punjab), Praveen Kumar Sinha, noted the successful outcomes, implying that the efforts to maintain public order and ensure legal compliance are evident in the figures. He assured that the Punjab Police aims to expedite the processes involved in releasing vehicles currently under custody while following all necessary legal protocols within a defined timeframe.
