Punjab Police have sealed the Shambhu Border following a significant assembly of farmers at the Punjab-Haryana border, who were preparing for a march to Delhi. This march is part of the planned ‘Desh Bachao Morcha’ Mahapanchayat, a movement opposing the proposed India-US trade deal. Visuals from the Patiala side revealed a substantial turnout of farmers demonstrating against the trade agreement at the border.

Previous Protests and Responses

On July 20, farmers staged a protest at the Shambhu Toll Plaza along the Ambala-Punjab highway, which was triggered by the arrest of Gurnam Singh Charuni, the National President of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni faction). This protest resulted in temporary roadblocks, but according to Ambala Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jagbir Singh, the blockades have since been lifted, allowing traffic to resume normally.

DSP Jagbir Singh outlined that the protesters have specific demands that relate to issues in Delhi. He provided assurance that the situation is being monitored and that law and order measures are in place. “The route from Amritsar to Delhi had been blocked. However, traffic flow has now been restored, and arrangements to maintain order will be in place as the situation develops,” he stated.

In anticipation of the farmers’ one-day march to Delhi on July 21, there is extensive police deployment and barricading at the Shambhu Border. Authorities are taking precautions to manage the situation effectively.

Government’s Position on Farmers’ Concerns

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju addressed reporters following a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Parliamentary Party, known as ‘Mangal Milan’. During this briefing, he underscored that the Prime Minister had assured members that farmers’ interests are a high priority and that they would not be disadvantaged by the trade agreement.

Rijiju emphasised that the welfare of farmers remains crucial in the context of any Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed with other nations. He noted that the government is committed to ensuring that such agreements will benefit both farmers and the nation. “The Prime Minister assured that no harm would come to them and that we are addressing farmers’ welfare in our commitments,” he added.

The stance taken by the government aims to alleviate concerns among farmers, particularly regarding the prospective impacts of international agreements on local agricultural practices and markets.

BJP MPs Advocate for Unity in Resolving Farmers’ Issues

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Ashok Kumar Mittal called for a unified approach to address the ongoing issues faced by farmers as he arrived for the NDA meeting. He expressed optimism that a constructive solution to the farmers’ protest could be achieved.

Mittal’s comments reflect a broader recognition within the government of the complexities surrounding agricultural policy and the sentiments of the farming community. His call for unity highlights the need for collaborative engagement between political leaders and farmers to resolve concerns that have emerged amidst the protests.

The government’s involvement in addressing farmers’ issues is becoming increasingly prominent, particularly with the upcoming discussions about trade agreements and their implications on local agricultural sectors. As farmers continue to mobilise, the dialogue between government officials and agricultural representatives remains paramount in seeking a resolution.
