Punjab Disburses Rs 1,149 Crore to 33 Lakh Women Under Monthly Financial Aid Scheme

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Punjab government has effectively distributed Rs 1,149 crore to approximately 33 lakh women through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This initiative falls under the Mukh Mantri Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojana, which aims to provide social security and financial aid to women throughout the state. The primary goal of this scheme is to ensure that financial assistance reaches women directly, minimising delays and eliminating intermediaries in the process.

Financial Support Based on Caste Categories

Eligible women belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category receive monthly assistance of Rs 1,500, while beneficiaries from other categories are provided Rs 1,000 each month. As reported, SC beneficiaries have already received Rs 4,500 each in three monthly instalments, whereas women from other groups have obtained Rs 3,000 in the same timeframe. The vast majority of those enrolled in the scheme—the government indicates—exceeds 70 lakh, marking it as one of the most significant initiatives aimed at women’s social security in Punjab.

Beneficiaries have commended the efficiency of the DBT mechanism, stating that it has ensured timely access to funds. For instance, Sarabjit Kaur from Gurdaspur remarked that having the assistance sent directly to her bank account ensured that the funds were available for necessary household expenses. She noted that if the money had been distributed in cash, it could have been misused, whereas direct credit allows for better management of resources.

Another beneficiary, Gagandeep Kaur from Harchowal, shared her experience of a swift and transparent application process, stating that she received credit within five to six days after submitting her application. She found the experience hassle-free and appreciated that the direct transfers negated the need for lengthy wait times in queues to collect cash. Beneficiaries like Suman Kumari of Sri Hargobindpur stated that the financial assistance has been crucial in covering household and educational costs, signifying its broad impact on women’s lives.

Government Commitment to Women’s Financial Independence

Baljit Kaur, the Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development, emphasised the government’s commitment to financial security and dignity for women through the initiative. She reiterated that the administration aims to ensure that all eligible recipients receive assistance in a timely and transparent manner. The initiative has been implemented with the goal of enhancing the financial independence of women in the state by providing direct access to funds.

Supporting the DBT rollout is Axis Bank, which acts as the nodal banking partner for the scheme. Reynold D’Souza, Group Head – Branch Banking, North and TASC Business at Axis Bank, stated the institution remains committed to ensuring the timely and transparent transfer of benefits to beneficiaries across Punjab. This partnership reflects the collaborative effort to boost women’s empowerment through direct financial support.

Ultimately, the introduction of the direct transfer mechanism signifies a proactive approach toward strengthening women’s financial independence in Punjab. By placing financial assistance directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries, the scheme not only aims to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles but also encourages women to take control of their finances effectively.
