Punjab CM Announces Free Bus Travel For NEET Aspirants From June 20-22

The CSR Journal Magazine

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has declared that students sitting for the NEET examination will receive free bus travel on Punjab Roadways buses from June 20 to June 22, 2026. The initiative aims to assist candidates, particularly those from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, in reaching their examination centres without the burden of travel expenses. CM Mann communicated this decision through a post on the social media platform X, highlighting the struggles faced by students in accessing funds for transport.

According to CM Mann, several students face significant challenges in arranging transport to examination venues. He noted, “Many poor students take the NEET exam. They don’t even have money for the fare to get to the exam centre.” His announcement comes after a recent engagement with students, during which they expressed their need for assistance in travel arrangements.

To benefit from this scheme, students are required to present their admit cards when boarding the buses; this will serve as proof of eligibility for free travel. Mann’s message included a prayer for the students’ success as they prepare for the exam.

Union Education Minister’s Review Meeting

Simultaneously, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has convened a high-level review meeting to ensure thorough preparations for the upcoming NEET-UG re-examination set for June 21, 2026. This meeting underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity and transparency in the examination process. Pradhan has urged officials to diligently address any issues identified in the previous iteration of the exam.

During the meeting, Pradhan emphasised the importance of effective coordination with District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police in various states. These measures are aimed at enhancing the monitoring and security protocols at examination centres. He furthermore stressed that monitoring should be rigorous, ensuring the safety and security of all participants.

In addition to security assurances, Pradhan has mandated that accommodations for students, such as transportation, drinking water, and other essential services, must be prioritised. He reiterated the need for vigilance in implementing these arrangements to safeguard the candidates’ interests.

Background on NEET-UG Examination

The NEET-UG 2026 examination, previously conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 3, faced cancellation on May 12 due to allegations of a coordinated paper leak. This unprecedented decision affected over 22 lakh students who appeared for the test at more than 5,400 centres across 551 cities in India and 14 international locations.

In response to the controversy surrounding the leaked exam papers, the Union Education Minister indicated earlier that future NEET-UG examinations would transition to a computer-based test (CBT) format, commencing next year. This move aims to strengthen the integrity of the examination process and enhance security measures.

As the June 21 re-examination approaches, all stakeholders are expected to remain vigilant and ensure a smooth conduct of the exam for the candidates who rely on it for their future educational opportunities. The Punjab government’s initiative to provide free transportation is seen as a supportive step in this direction.
