The Tamil Nadu Selection Committee has announced that the state will retain its existing procedures for MBBS and BDS counselling during the 2026-27 academic year. This decision comes in light of recent modifications made by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) concerning All India Quota (AIQ) admissions. The MCC’s changes aim to enhance the counselling experience but will not apply to Tamil Nadu’s operations.

The MCC implemented several updates, including new categorisations for candidates into Freeze and Float options, as well as an online verification system for documents from Float candidates. A new digital mechanism for seat resignation has also been introduced. However, officials in Tamil Nadu have clarified that these alterations pertain specifically to AIQ admissions and will not impact the state’s current counselling framework.

Existing Framework is Adequate

The Selection Committee explained that the state’s present counselling system incorporates numerous features already seen in the MCC’s revised guidelines. For instance, all candidates are required to upload necessary certificates during their application submission. These documents undergo a centralised verification process prior to the finalisation of admissions.

Original certificates are only subject to verification when candidates present themselves at the designated colleges to complete their admission procedures. The robustness of the existing framework means that no modifications are needed, ensuring a seamless transition into the new academic year.

This assertion underscores the Tamil Nadu authorities’ commitment to maintaining an efficient and transparent counselling process, prioritising the interests of the students involved.

The Selection Committee has also indicated that any future proposals to amend the state’s counselling approach to align with national guidelines will be considered with careful scrutiny. Leaders intend to assess potential changes thoroughly, ensuring they serve the best interests of students.
