Himachal Pradesh is set to experience widespread rainfall until August 18, as indicated by a recent announcement from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The southwest monsoon remains active in the state, contributing to varying levels of rainfall across multiple districts. According to Sandeep Kumar Sharma, a Senior Scientist with IMD Himachal Pradesh, many regions recorded light to moderate rainfall, with significant showers reported in Dharamshala, located in Kangra district.

During the past 24 hours, Dharamshala experienced some of the heaviest rainfall, while areas such as Kangra, Bilaspur, Mandi, and Solan received light to moderate showers predominantly in the evening and night. The highest rainfall recorded in this period peaked at 91 mm, with ongoing weather conditions prompting continuous rainfall across many parts of the state.

Sharma noted that while light to moderate rainfall will prevail on August 14, there is a potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations within specific districts. Areas such as Chamba, Mandi, and Shimla might also experience significant rainfall in isolated spots. Rainfall activity is predicted to carry on into August 15, albeit with a possible decrease in intensity. A yellow alert has been issued for the districts of Bilaspur, Kangra, and Mandi.

Forecast for Upcoming Days

The IMD forecasts a resurgence in monsoon activity starting August 16, especially impacting districts like Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi, where heavy rainfall is anticipated. Rainfall patterns are expected to persist through August 17 and 18, prompting orange alerts for the regions of Kangra and Sirmaur on August 18, with predictions for very heavy rainfall at isolated sites.

Currently, no fresh flash-flood warnings have been issued. However, Sharma has cautioned that such warnings could be necessary if rainfall intensity increases. He advises the public to exercise caution near rivers, streams, and other water bodies, as heightened rainfall can lead to sudden increases in water levels.

Additionally, there are warnings for commuters regarding visibility and road conditions, particularly in areas experiencing heavy rainfall. Regions like Sirmaur, Solan, and Shimla may contend with poor visibility, which could be significantly reduced during heavy downpours. Given that this rainfall episode is expected to last for approximately four days, individuals planning long-distance journeys are urged to verify road conditions before embarking.

Current Rainfall Statistics and Temperature Changes

Despite the recent uptick in rainfall, Himachal Pradesh has recorded 10 per cent less rainfall than average during the monsoon season from June 1 to August 14. A notable deficit of around 50 per cent has been recorded in Kangra, followed by Mandi at approximately 27 per cent. Other districts, such as Kullu and Shimla, have seen 25 per cent and 22 per cent excess rainfall, respectively, while most remaining areas are experiencing deficits.

As rainfall continues, temperatures are expected to decrease by approximately 2-4 degrees Celsius over the coming 24 hours. Currently, Shimla and its neighbouring areas are experiencing temperatures around 24-25 degrees Celsius, while central districts like Kangra and Bilaspur are at about 32 degrees Celsius. Given the ongoing rainfall, a marked drop in temperatures is anticipated in various parts of the state.

The IMD has urged residents and travellers to remain vigilant regarding weather warnings, refrain from unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall, and exercise heightened caution near rivers, streams, landslide-prone areas, and vulnerable road routes.
