Pune Cylinder Explosion Results in Fatality and Injuries

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred in Pune’s Wagholi area on the morning of June 5, 2026, when a gas leak led to an explosion, killing a 35-year-old man and injuring two elderly family members. The explosion happened around 9.15 am in a two-storey residential building located in Khandwe Nagar, as reported by local officials. The blast caused a significant fire, prompting immediate action from local residents who alerted the fire brigade.

Response to the Incident

Following the alarm raised by the residents, fire tenders from Kharadi, Dhanori, and Yerawada fire stations swiftly responded to the scene. Upon their arrival, they found the blaze had already consumed a portion of the first floor of the edifice. Firefighters worked diligently to control the fire, employing hose reels to extinguish the flames, and subsequently transported the injured individuals to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The deceased has been identified as Pandurang Vishnu Gitte, while his relatives, Vishnu Munjaji Gitte, aged 82, and Vrindavini Vishnu Gitte, aged 60, sustained serious burn injuries. Their current condition has not been specified, but the nature of their injuries suggests they require significant medical attention.

The explosion reportedly took place as a new LPG cylinder was being connected after the previous cylinder had run out of gas. Allegedly, a gas leakage led to the accumulation of gas inside the home, resulting in the powerful explosion that followed.

Extent of Damage

The resultant fire caused extensive damage to the residential structure, affecting various parts of the building. Officials noted that significant destruction occurred in the hall, where furniture, electrical wiring, a television, bathroom fittings, and a geyser were all reported damaged. In addition, household items within the kitchen, such as a refrigerator and various pieces of furniture, also suffered partial damage due to the intensity of the fire.

Investigators are expected to evaluate the site further to ascertain the exact cause of the leak that led to the explosion. Fire brigade officials emphasised the critical need for residents to ensure that gas connections are handled with caution to prevent similar accidents in the future.

This incident underscores the importance of safety measures in residential areas, particularly in the handling of LPG cylinders. Authorities are likely to increase awareness and provide guidance on safe usage practices to avoid future mishaps of this serious nature.
