Pune Reports Highest Unhygienic Food Complaints in Maharashtra

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pune district has been identified as the primary source of complaints regarding unhygienic food within Maharashtra, according to statements made by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe on Saturday. This surge in complaints follows the introduction of the state’s new online grievance portal, which enables residents to report food safety issues easily and efficiently.

The portal, accessible at complaints.mahafda.in, reportedly garnered nearly 10 lakh visits in the first 24 hours since its launch. Mundhe disclosed that the majority of concerns logged on the platform were related to unhygienic food served by various establishments in Pune district, highlighting a significant need for improved food safety measures.

Mundhe elaborated that the initiative aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the enforcement of food safety standards by allowing citizens to take an active role in reporting violations. The response to the portal emphasises the public’s willingness to engage with food safety regulations.

Grievance Redressal Mechanism Explained

During a press briefing in Pune, Mundhe outlined the grievance redressal process associated with the new portal. Each complaint submitted will be acknowledged by the FDA’s regional joint commissioner within 24 hours. Additionally, complaints will be assigned to designated officers for further investigation.

If an established timeline for action is not met, the matter will automatically escalate to a higher official within the regulatory framework. This systematic approach is designed to ensure that complaints are addressed promptly and effectively.

Mundhe also encouraged food service establishments, including hotels and restaurants, to implement comprehensive food safety management systems in order to adhere to the 22 essential regulations as stipulated by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

Increased Inspections and Regulatory Actions

Since taking up the role of FDA Commissioner in May, Mundhe has initiated a heightened level of inspections at various food service locations throughout Maharashtra. This proactive stance has already resulted in some significant actions against establishments found to be in serious violation of hygiene and food safety protocols.

Notably, the food business licence of the Parsi Dairy Farm in Mumbai was suspended due to severe hygiene breaches. Additionally, officials announced the suspension of the canteen licence at KEM Hospital in Mumbai, ordering it to cease operations for similar infractions. These measures underscore the FDA’s commitment to ensuring food safety across the state.

Mundhe also indicated that the department is currently investigating the application of blockchain technology to maintain transparent records of food business operators facing enforcement actions. This move aims to bolster future accountability and illustrate the FDA’s commitment to a more efficient regulatory environment in Maharashtra.
