Priyanka Gandhi Criticises BJP-RSS for ‘Shuddhikaran’ Havan

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has publicly condemned the BJP and RSS regarding a ‘shuddhikaran’ havan that took place at Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani. The event coincided with a Congress rally addressed by party president Mallikarjun Kharge on August 8. Vadra stated that the Prime Minister should publicly denounce this act and extend an apology for it.

Allegations of Ideological Discrimination

Dismissing the actions of the BJP and RSS as reflective of their underlying ideologies, Vadra asserted that such mindsets should be rejected outright. Speaking to journalists, she expressed her firm belief that the Prime Minister has a responsibility to condemn these actions. This incident has brought to light concerns about the political climate surrounding the upcoming 2027 Uttarakhand Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Kumari Selja echoed Vadra’s sentiments, criticising the ruling party for allegedly promoting an ideology that undermines equality. She argued that while the BJP often speaks of initiatives like ‘Tiranga Yatras’, their actions contradict their stated principles, particularly concerning fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Selja emphasised the contradiction inherent in the BJP’s approach. She highlighted that despite the party’s grand claims about inclusivity and equality, the occurrence of the havan signifies a troubling departure from these values. She described the action as shameful and indicative of a wider pattern of behaviour associated with the BJP-RSS government.

Call for Accountability from State Government

Selja further took aim at the state government, alleging that it has failed to take necessary actions following the incident. She drew attention to Uttarakhand, where the BJP holds power, criticising their governance and the permissive atmosphere that allows such events to unfold without repercussions.

Pointing out the significance of the location where Kharge and other Congress leaders held their rally, she questioned the appropriateness of conducting a purification ceremony nearby. Selja stressed that it is the ideological stance of the ruling party that warrants purification, rather than the actions or beliefs of opposition leaders.

Both Vadra and Selja’s comments tap into broader concerns regarding political accountability and the treatment of political opponents in the region. The ongoing discourse reflects the deepening divisions in Indian politics, especially in the context of the upcoming elections.

BJP Response to the Controversy

On the other hand, Union Minister JP Nadda has also been vocal about the outlined incident, registering his disapproval of the alleged actions. He stated that the BJP does not support practices that may be deemed divisive or controversial, distancing the party from the conduct of the ‘shuddhikaran’ havan.

Nadda reassured that the party will conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations made by Kharge and other Congress leaders. This response may reflect an attempt by the BJP to mitigate any potential fallout from the incident and maintain a semblance of integrity during a sensitive political period.

As the political landscape in Uttarakhand evolves, it remains to be seen how these events will shape public opinion and influence electoral dynamics leading up to the Assembly elections in 2027.
