The resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has marked the conclusion of a significant political episode surrounding the NEET-UG controversy. This decision follows weeks of protests and calls for accountability after the cancellation and rescheduling of the NEET-UG examination that was initially held on May 3, 2026. In a two-page letter directed to “my young friends,” Pradhan outlined his rationale for stepping down, emphasising the need to prioritise the future of students over prolonged political disputes.

Focus on Students’ Futures

In his resignation letter, Pradhan highlighted his long-standing commitment to the educational sector, stating that he has devoted over four decades to advocating for students, teachers, and educational reforms. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opportunity to serve under his leadership, asserting that the aspirations of the younger generation are paramount. Pradhan detailed the government’s response to irregularities in the NEET-UG exam, which included transferring the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation, cancelling the exam, and scheduling a re-examination. He announced that future exams would transition to Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode starting next year.

Pradhan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensure a smooth examination process for over 20 lakh students. He mentioned the collaborative efforts made with state and district administrations to navigate the crisis effectively. The revised NEET-UG examination was ultimately conducted on June 21, 2026, and the results, announced on July 16, were reportedly satisfactory, with many students from underprivileged backgrounds achieving success.

Despite these achievements, Pradhan noted that some individuals in influential positions attempted to undermine the process, causing him significant distress. He reiterated his belief in democracy and the importance of uplifting the youth as the future leaders of the nation. The events leading to his resignation were described as deeply troubling for him, as he contended that they were not about personal honour but rather about safeguarding the potential of India’s youth.

Commitment to National Unity and Students

Pradhan expressed his concerns regarding the situation at Jantar Mantar and throughout the country. He underscored the necessity of preventing anti-national elements from exploiting the unrest to ensure national unity. He stated that it was crucial for students to focus on their studies and future careers without being ensnared in legal disputes. Based on these considerations, he chose to resign in order to protect the future of Indian students.

In closing his letter, Pradhan conveyed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his consistent guidance and support. He also acknowledged his colleagues in the Council of Ministers, the Ministry’s staff, and all those he worked alongside during his tenure. Emphasising that serving the nation remains his top priority, he asserted his ongoing commitment to the development of India, the state of Odisha, and the aspirations of the youth.

Pradhan’s resignation not only marks the end of a tumultuous period for the NEET-UG examination but also poses significant questions about the educational governance in the country moving forward. His departure from the ministerial role signifies a moment of reflection for the government on the handling of student-related issues amidst growing scrutiny and accountability demands.
