Newly appointed Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has stated that he will undertake his responsibilities with humility and a sense of duty. His remarks come after he received additional charge of the Education Ministry following the resignation of former minister Dharmendra Pradhan. President Droupadi Murmu accepted Pradhan’s resignation on July 26, 2026, amid student protests regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak.

Joshi expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting him with this significant role. He highlighted the necessity to work diligently under the Prime Minister’s guidance to meet the expectations of the Ministry. He reiterated his commitment to performing his duties with dedication, humility, and integrity.

His focus, he stated, will be to ensure continuity in the initiatives established by the previous administration and to further develop the education sector in India.

Recognition of Pradhan’s Contributions

In his statement, Joshi acknowledged the efforts of Dharmendra Pradhan, who served as Union Education Minister prior to him. He noted that Pradhan played a crucial role in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) and achieving significant milestones during his tenure over the past twelve years of the Modi government.

Joshi indicated that numerous important initiatives had been undertaken in the education sector in recent years. He emphasised the progress made in transforming the education system and expressed his intention to build on these advancements.

His commitment to maintaining momentum in educational reforms aims to ensure that students benefit from a robust and effective educational framework moving forward.

Pradhan’s Resignation Details

The resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan was formally announced to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier on the same day. Pradhan cited the ongoing student protests surrounding examination irregularities, particularly the NEET issue, as the reason for his resignation. He expressed concern over the potential for “anti-national forces” to exploit the situation arising from the protests.

In a letter posted on the social media platform X, Pradhan articulated his reasons for stepping down, stating that it was essential to preserve the unity of the country and ensure that the future of students is not compromised by legal entanglements. He emphasized the importance of prioritising student interests amid the current turmoil.

Pradhan’s decision highlights the sensitivity surrounding the matter and the implications it has on student welfare, reinforcing his commitment to the education sector even after his departure.
