Police Dog Mary Aids in Locating Rape Suspect in Uttar Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

A police dog named Mary significantly assisted the Sambhal Police in resolving a sexual assault case involving a six-year-old girl in the Babrala area of Uttar Pradesh. The incident came to light on June 18, 2026, when the child went missing after leaving home to play, prompting her family to search for her amidst growing concerns.

After nearly two hours of searching, the family discovered the girl unconscious near a pond located approximately 300 metres from their home in a wooded area. They immediately transported her to the Gunnaur Community Health Centre for medical attention and notified the police regarding the situation.

Investigation Challenges

Upon their arrival on the night of June 18, the Babrala Police sealed off the area to conduct investigations. The following day, June 19, a forensic team was also deployed; however, the investigation faced numerous obstacles. Notably, there were no functional CCTV cameras in the vicinity, and no eyewitnesses could provide accounts of the incident.

Despite these challenges, investigators collected evidence from the site, including a gamcha, which is a type of cotton towel. The girl’s father filed a complaint on June 20, expressing concerns about potential sexual assault. Following this, the police formally registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

In light of the seriousness of the case, Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi took swift action by deploying a trained dog squad. Mary, a gold medal-winning police dog, was brought to the crime scene to assist in uncovering crucial leads.

Tracking Down the Accused

Mary was given the gamcha to smell, and officials reported that she quickly picked up the scent trail. Following this, the dog led the investigators through fields and wooded areas, ultimately pointing them towards the residence of a man identified as Sandeep.

Upon questioning the family members at Sandeep’s house, they denied his presence, and investigators soon discovered that he had fled, likely aware of the ongoing police inquiry. Sustained efforts by officers to collect intelligence from local residents suggested that Sandeep was indeed the suspect in the crime.

The police subsequently launched a search operation to locate him. They eventually apprehended Sandeep and recovered a country-made pistol during the operation. While he is currently receiving medical care, the condition of the six-year-old girl has been reported to be stable.

Recognition for Mary’s Contribution

Following the successful arrest, SP Krishna Kumar Bishnoi publicly commended Mary for her invaluable contribution, announcing a cash reward of Rs 10,000. He personally presented the cheque to the dog, recognising her role in helping investigators reach the suspect.

Bishnoi elaborated on Mary’s achievements, noting she was a gold medalist in her training programme and had previously aided in solving complex cases, including a blind murder in Bilaspur that involved police teams from multiple districts. Her track record underscores the significance of the expert dog squad in investigations when traditional methods fail to generate leads.

The success of this case highlights the effective collaboration between human investigators and trained police dogs like Mary, emphasising their importance in tackling serious crimes.
